Brake shudder under light braking

Postby bcs0228 on Wed, 03 Aug 2016 11:12 +0000

Hi guys,

Just wondering whether anyone else has had this problem. I have a 2013 SR D/cab Hilux (with ABS) which I have had since new. It has 43,000km on the clock. At around the 20,000km mark I had a light shudder under braking and complained to Toyota. They skimmed the rotors for free and the problem went away. Toyota told me that any future brake shudder issues would not be covered under warranty. At 42,000km the problem has started to return and is gradually getting worse.

Is anyone else experiencing this problem? I shouldn't have to get the rotors skimmed every 20K. The car is a personal vehicle and is not worked hard. It tows a camper trailer about 3 times a year and the tub is normally empty. I owned a Prado for 4 years and after 80,000K's the brakes were still perfect.

I should point out that at the 10,000km service I complained to Toyota about the brakes occasionally squealing when driving in reverse and they immediately ordered and fitted a set of modified rotors and pads. Apparently this was a common fault and was fixed under warranty for anyone who complained about this problem. I was not told what the difference was between the old rotors and the modified rotors. Has anyone else had a set of modified rotors fitted and had any problems with brake shudder?

Regards
Martin

Yep, I had exactly the same brake shudder at around 25K, Toyota milled the rotors under warranty, Fine again now. No rotor replacement.

Bite the bullet and fit new rotors,
I personal like dba4000 in slotted (not drilled)
Next best are T2 witch are a standard T1 rotor with slots

I have 4" bigger tyres and drive hard, they work every time with no fade or shutter

Thanks for the response john253a,

Do the dba4000 rotors replace the existing rotors without any mods? I.e. do the Toyota brake callipers and pads work with these rotors? Can you remember the price and where you got them from? I'm in Brisbane.

Just spoke with Toyota and booked it in for a service in two weeks. I asked about the rotors that were replaced after the 10,000km service and they said the rotor was redesigned to eliminate vibration that some people were experiencing.

I will probably have to get them skimmed at my cost. Looks like aftermarket rotors may be the way to go.

4000 series are identical in shape and size, but what they are made out of is different
T2 is what is on car in pic
4000 is what is in my hand
As you can see there are colour dots, they are heat markers so you know how hot you have gotten them

john253a,

Thanks for the pic. In that pic, were you in the process of changing the T2s to 4000s?

Yep I had to order the 4000 from dba as they normally only make in drilled and slotted and I didn't want drilled, as they tend to crack if there hot and you sink them doing a water crossing, so I brought the t2 and ordered 4000, t2 were on 2 days, before I got the call saying they got them on a run earlie then expected

Hi Martin
2013 SR5 had shudder when lightly applying brakes. Dealer replaced rotors and pads under warranty at 25000, at 30000 the problem was returning, at 45000 the dealer said Toyota think it is the rear ? . I have never heard of light braking and shudder thru steering wheel being caused by rear brakes, but they went ahead and they adjusted the rear so much that the car was being stopped by the rear brakes not the front they also machined the fronts (the replaced rotors were only 20000 old)
At 50000 i again complained, but was fobbed off. Now at 60000 service today, they have rang to say the pads need replacing and the rotors need machining AGAIN !!! They make it sound like they are doing me a favour by saying ' i need to pay $175 for pads" but they will machine disc's under warranty.
Just to be clear that means my car has had 2 sets of rotors and 2 sets of brake pads and the discs been machined twice all in 60000km's
But they are doing me a favour !!! I have no doubt that this problem will reoccur and then it will be out of warranty and they will tell me that the disc's have been machined too much and i will need to buy new ones .
3 other people i know have the same problem and Toyota say there isnt a problem ????????

For what it is worth, I had to have my 2015/6 Hilux machined at the 10k and 20k service.

Best money you'll ever spend is throw away the factory and upgrade to T3's (dba 4000) best bang for buck upgrade I've done on my brakes

This post is now a few years old, but I thought I would add that I ended up replacing the front rotors with aftermarket ones. These were an improvement over the factory ones, but still needed skimming after about 40k of use.

I came across another post that mentioned a similar problem. They put it down to the rear drum brakes not working effectively. The front brakes were doing all the work, getting hot and warping. I decided to wind the rear drum brakes out myself every couple of months and since then I haven’t had any problems with the front rotors.
