Removing power steering rack.

Postby czechdave on Wed, 17 Feb 2016 3:05 +0000

Hey guys,

How hard is it to remove the power steering rack?
I have a set of new bushes to go in and wondering if I can do it myself and save a bit of coin.
I have heard they can be a pain..?

Cheers,

Dave.

I had mine replaced - 4 hours on a hoist and it can be a real PIA to get it out. I think personally it is one of those jobs that whilst it might cost some dollars you will be glad that you paid to have it done. Right up there with pulling a gearbox out on a trolley jack...

Yeah thats what I have heard and I'm thinking the same. Best pay someone to go through the pain haha.
Did you just change the bushes on yours or any of the seals?
I know the main shaft seal is leaking but only ever so slightly.
I'll have to sus out if theres a new seal you can get for it.

I replaced the whole shooting match - cost like $327-360 delivered. Is obiviously a chinese make but it has been in there for just under 100k without a single issue. Ebay has them with tie rods for that price.

I just had a quick look at the mount kit which is $80 bucks add in another $50 for seals / repairs and you are up to half the price of a new one and still have old rack and tie rod ends.......

As I was budgeting $600 for fitting I went with the idea of replace the whole thing so that I only paid the $600 once

I just checked my vehicle log and it cost me $372 back in November 2013 :D

Power steering rack removal

Postby ebb on Thu, 07 Apr 2016 2:30 +0000

Hi. I am wondering if anyone has any tips or tricks to removing the power steering rack out of my 07 4x4 hilux. I have all the bolts and hoses off the rack and it is disconnected from the input shaft. What's the best way to get it out from where it is?Thanks in advance.

I pulled mine out when I was replacing the front cross member, came out pretty easy once I had the front diff out.

I changed bushes out on weekend. It's not difficult. Took me about half a day. The most difficult bit was getting bushes out once rack was out of car. The super pro bushes are good, but there is little to no chance of doing it without removing the rack from the vehicle. The oem bushes have an outer metal sleeve that is a compression fit inside the rack. Easy enough to remove with a screwdriver and hammer once the rack is out.

No need to remove sway bar as some have reported.
