Transfer Case Oil Leak

Postby Rocket55 on Sun, 06 Nov 2011 2:27 +0000

I've got oil leaking out of the transfer case seal on the output shaft that goes to the front wheels. It's a genuine leak, ie: it's dripping on the ground and rust proffing the bottom of the car as i drive along.

How hard are these to replace? Is it a box out job or can you just get the shaft and seal out insitu?

Any help appreciated.

PS: I flooded the car 2 weeks ago (water in the cab) so I'm assuming this was a contributing factor

Cheers

Over filled maybe or it may have water inside causing the oil to leak? Check the top level bolt (24mm) it should trickle gear oil form the top... cross finger you have no water.
To be safe, just remove all the oil and top up correctly.
Hope it helps.

You drain transfer oil, remove front tail shaft at gearbox flange, 4 nuts then in the middle of the flange is a large nut. once removed the flange slides off. Note were the seal sits as far as depth goes then pop the old seal out and fit new one with a socket so as to only hi outer edge.
Check flange is not warn, is so clean up with fine wet and dry or similar.I would lock-tight nuts with 243.

Thanks guys. I have ckecked and have no water in there. The oil level is ever so slightly down (consistent with the amount of leakage. I have got a new seal and some more oil and will change the seal over the upcoming weekend. Sounds like a fairly straight forward process. (famous last words.....)

Seal changed, mission successful :D A couple of thoughts though. I believe the person who owned my car before me was a gorilla, or at least someone who got a rattle gun for Christmas and went nuts

Started out by draining the oil, ended up getting out the 3/4 drive gear just to undo the drain plug   . Then came the 14mm drive shaft nuts, ended up linking a 19mm spanner to my 14mm end to end (Grimise :o ) These aren't your Super Crap short spanners either. Ended up with both hands on them and my foot up against the slider.

Then came that super 30mm nut holding the drive flange on, unpicking the lock deformity was a truely PITA experience. Used screw driver (ha ha), centre punch, cold chisel, side cutters and then Dremil and eventually it was open. Break out the 3/4 drive gear again and presto, nut off. Nedded a gear puller to get the flange off, but if I had a better angle at it could have almost got it off by hand. Total time to this point 5hrs. WTF

The seal came out and went back in easily, reassembly was straight forward, about 1 hr, much better :D :D .

Would recommend getting a new 30mm nut (only a couple of $) for reassembly, and a 5mm cold chisel for opening up the deformed nut, this would be a huge time saver. Would also recommend a hoist as 6 hrs lying under your Lux on a mechanics creeper holding your head and shoulders at the drive line height tends to give your stomach muscles a hard time :!:

They are all that tight. It blew me away how tight the 14mm headed tail shaft bolts can be. A brickies mortar chisel is the go for lock tab on the big nut.

Looks like Ive got a leak as well. Its looks like its the front drive shaft seal. The thing is though it seems to have started since a fairly hard hit under there last weekend. I thought it was the transfer case when I did it but there wasn't any new marks on the guard. Maybe it was the front drive shaft that coped the hit and has damaged the seal? Is there are chance I have damaged the transfer case or any thing?

Cheers,

Chris.

What seals did you guys end up buying? OEM or aftermarket? And does the vehicle need to be jacked up at all? Cheers

What he said. If you're not running any lift and you don' t fit under your lux all that well, just run the front wheels up onto a brick, or 2 bricks side by side which make a good sized pad for the tyres to sit on.

Mine looked like it might have been a crack in the case or leaking through a join by the way the oil had spreed all over the place but it was the seal. Hope yours is the same.

Cheers,

Chris.

Re: Transfer Case Oil Leak

Te OEM transfer case seal for the front tailshaft is now a revised design and the outside loooks completely different to the original without a large metal disc that actually trapped dirt and grit. I've had 2 transfer cases in 100k km abd they both needed the front seal replacing and from the chatter on here is a fairly common problem.
I have a spare transfer case, been run with mud in the oil and is a bit noisey, if anyone needs to replace a broken case

Transfer case leak?

Postby dan9245 on Wed, 26 Nov 2014 2:12 +0000

Hey guys

Just recently got back from a camping trip down south of nsw, was cleaning the car and when washing underneath i notice oil coming from the prop shaft going to the front diff on the transfer case, and oil has been lightly sprayed all underneath

Would it be a blown seal? DIY fix or should i send it to toyota?

Cheers
Dan

Hey dan9245, just fixed that exact leak 2 months ago on my truck. About $50 in parts genuine Toyota which was two seals and a new nut and about 30mins to do.

Apparently it's a common leak! Definitely a diy job it you have the tools ( good punch and a rattle gun)
