hey guys i have just had my 06 d4d tuned and have found that i get clutch slip 3rd gear and up when WOT. so looks like im up for a new clutch. before i go to ask around at work shops, i wanted a bit of knowledge as to what i should be looking into. do you guys have any recommendations? car is making 160 hp and 410 nm. so i need something to hold down the power. car is used for 4wding and clutch needs to hold up to abuse. thanks in advance

I'm getting an NPC fitted this week, with larger flywheel. They seem to be the best ones out there from my research.

Complete clutch kit with flywheel etc was $1400 inc freight from Brissy to Perth. Been quoted around $500 to get it fitted by local mechanic. Price is a bit steeper than others out there but you get what you pay for. These are designed for a Landcruiser so I know it will last forever in my Hilux, also they make all their stuff in house.

thanks for that mate will look into them. was leaning towards a exedy prior to asking here as im running one in my wrx with 350hp with no issues with no slip or anything, but will see what the bloke that tuned my hilux says tomorrow, but ive got a better idea of what im looking at now cheers

I have 210k on my original 2008 D4D clutch, includes towing with a 2 ton offroad van for about 60k of that and 60k of offroad work as well. It occasionally is now slipping going uphill when I change down to a lower gear but its momentary and bites again, but I'm heading to Fraser Island and across to the Flinders Ranges via Birdsville in May with the van so time to get a new clutch.

Must say the OEM clutch has performed well from reading the above posts the BRC or OEM seem to be the picks.

But my question is besides the new clutch kit, are there any other components that should be changed as well. As an example I changed my timing belt at 150k, mechanic said water pump was OK so he did not replace it. Well 10k later it leaked, we did reach an arrangement and I only paid for 1/2 the labour costs to pull everything apart.

I only want to pull it apart once labour is usually the biggest component, so I don't want to pull it apart and not replace a cheap part at the time.

OEM clutch is fine but if you've had the D4D tuned on the dyno (or chipped etc) you'll more than likely find that the stock unit is not up to the task with that extra torque as myself and many others are finding out, plenty of stories on this forum.

Will go with a heavy duty clutch 4 terrain. As for other work I will change the rear main seal and change hydraulic fluid.

4 Terrain clutch kit with Flywheel suits the following vehicles:

Yes - I changed mine. It's worthwhile if your vehicle is no longer stock or you are hard on clutches.

Just had the NPC clutch fitted today. Very happy with it so far, it's still yet to 'wear in' but already it feels just like the old clutch minus the slippage, not heavy under the foot at all.

I decided to install the NPC HD Clutch with larger flywheel and had the work completed yesterday. On picking it up the clutch had to be fully depressed and take up was barely 5mm off the floor.

This morning I had a hard time selecting gears and the changes are very notchy and rang the mechanic, he said that with HD clutches that this is normal while wearing in.

Not convinced I rang NPC they said that the pushrod at the clutch pedal which goes into the master cylinder to turn it ¼ to ½ this will ensure that there was sufficient free play.

I again contacted the mechanic and he said that this is a problem with clutches and that this fix only masks the real problem that is with the clutch itself and puts more stress on the master cylinder.

Can anyone who has fitted this clutch tell me who is right.

I have the same clutch.
Had to adjust the push rod when it was new.
I have also now removed the dampener.

Mate I've had my NPC fitted for about 4 weeks now and I cant fault it. From the moment it was installed the feel and friction point was practically identical to the stock clutch, I had/have no problem changing gears at all. I have not had to adjust/remove anything either. Def smells of a poor install/setup job to me...

Had the pushrod adjusted this morning to the master cylinder pedal nice and light and takeup is around mid way and selecting gears is smooth again. You would think that the mechanic would have done this at the time of fitting, I dont think he road tested it at all, but it took only a couple of minutes and alls fine. Definitely put in the larger flywheel especially with towing.

Thanks for everyones help with the selection process and I am happy with the NPC HD clutch hopefully I will get another 200k out of it.

Yeah you're about spot on mate. I paid $1400 inc freight to Perth (about $1250 ish for the kit), plus $530 to get it fitted by a local mobile mechanic who changed it out in my garage.
