I have a 2011 D4D that I bought with 48,000km. I've put 30,000km on it a year later and the clutch is slipping. From what it sounds like, I wouldn't be doing myself any favors having the dealer look at it or change the factory clutch for another one. I think I'll look into what might be my options for heavy duty. It's really tough to find those kind of mods where I live in Ecuador, though.

Three year 100 000 K warranty ........I would be speaking to Mr Toyota and asking some serious questions.......unless you like spending $2k of your own hard earned :? :? :?

hi there from europe
I have a january 2013 dual cab 3.0d4d manual, from new, no mods, 49000 and the clutch is gone, no offroad but a few snowy roads, twice a year a under 1000kg trailer for the holidays, only higway use.
very disapointed...
waiting for toyota to say is it gonna be warranty or not...
and I am copying this forum massages to be prepared for an argument...

me again
Toyota replaced my clutch disk, bearing and all hydrauilcs (pedal and clutch cylinder and pistons and lines) IN WARRANTY. As they took out my old clutch there was signs of wear on only about 10mm of clutch surface which means the clutch plate never fully touch the flywheel...
So this is sorted... (did I mention the had to change complete handbrake cables at 45000km due to uneven braking power..)
And now a new battle with toyota... consumption has gone up about 2 litres and it got lazy, top speed (which I do not care about but just as an indicator of possible problem) is about 150km/h, previously 195 (as per speedometer not GPS).
It is probably filth in air intake and egr...

Ok now egr and inlet manifold are cleaned under warranty. Fuel consuption is much better but there is still no pull from the engine. Now i am getting a new turbine under the warranty...

Opened this thread just now because I have just started getting definite signs of wear on my clutch. Ute is a 1-owner (ex Toyota mechanic) 2007 plate that I purchased with 150,000km. Have just ticked over 217,500km and the ute has endured at times what can only be described as mechanical abuse. Plenty of soft beach work in coastal W.A and challenging rocky/muddy tracks in addition to living at the end of a twisty pea-gravel road. Has taken everything I have thrown at it in its stride to my disbelief.

Would love to know what clutch it is before I pull the box to avoid unnecessary downtime but given the condition of the car at date of purchase I'm half expecting to be Genuine Toyota brand. Lucky break for me I guess? Call it even for the factory injector failure occurring at 205,000km (I had assumed they had already been replaced previously given the relatively unexpected longevity of these items)

What's the concensus among the board on aftermarket clutches?

Hope this information helps, will update when the time comes. In summary I absolutely love my Hilux and cannot fault it for what it is and how it's performed for me.

Regards,
One happy hilux fan for life

My 07 sr5 was pretty much exactly the same as yours, did around 200k on the factory clutch. I'm now running an extreme outback clutch, been in there for around 30k and havnt had any dramas except for a buggered thrust bearing at around 20k but that was from the amount of shit I was driving in I think.

Earlier d4d clutches are not great as this thread proves. I have recently sold the 07 lux (NPC clutch at 70k)and bought a 79. But at 15,000km just done the clutch in this also. Warranty not worth the fight and time as injector problem was enough. However I have put a 1300 nm clamp pressure conversion in the 79 from NPC. I have no affiliation to them and their product is dear, but it is a great product that improves the lux and Cruiser drivability greatly!! Same old "buy best and cry once" unfortunately ! Can't reccomend them enough.

hi
when the clutch on my january 2013 dual cab 3.0d4d manual went at 49000 it was due to the plate not pressing enough so they changed it all, only the foot pedal stayed orignal. and of course they have also changed the pressure bearring. but in a less then a year the bearing went.. and they replaced it again...and now the bearing went again... all under warranty...it's getting a bit old this warranty stuff...not to mention strange noises from egr cooler, but I'llput this in another topic...

My clutch didn't quite fail at 50000k, but was not performing under load, and I never towed a trailer. I have driven a bit in the outback and put it down to driver error in some situations. I replaced it with an exedy safari clutch fit for my purpose. I didn't wear out the clutch plate, as it was looking like new, it was the pressure plate that was the problem. The heat generated in that area was enough to fatigue the fingers and springs in the plate, hence the failure. That was my experience,, as I knew that going back to Toyota was futile, I needed to keep the vechile on the road, and the hassles of trying to get comphension or part there of. Sometimes it is easier to just bite the bullet and look forward.

I'm curious to know how many of the vehicles with clutch failure also had been "chipped" up or modified in other ways to increase power? Reason I ask is that someone else on this forum said that Toyota had built in a slip point for the clutch to prevent further damage to the drivetrain, and I've been thinking of chipping mine.

mine started slipping at about 60,000kms I did have a steinbauer and larger tyres installed for about 10,000 before it failed tho I have a feeling it would have copped a lot of abuse on a mine site before I got it

Thanks for the reply Spitfia. Have you been happy with the Steinbauer (that's what I'm thinking of installing)?

Steinbauer has been great i installed it to counteract the larger rubber, definitely no slouch up the hills and i don't even have it turned up past half way i have also seen a slight improvement in fuel economy from pre wheel and chip upgrade
