Snapped rear axle

Postby tonyrb on Sat, 31 May 2014 3:48 +0000

Hi, is there any stronger than factory rear axles out there, for 07 kun sr hilux?

lockright lokka, with 33s, lost a bit of traction doing a tight turn and I thought yee haa, had to pluck 2nd, clutch engaged and a little bang... I new straight away bugger, so I had to hit 3rd n pump it for few seconds haha until I thought no my tyers.....

Just thought this would be a good time to upgrade them ... and change driving style on dry roads.

No other rear axles that I know of, not to say they aren't available. They generally have not been a problem that I'm aware of. Maybe a selectable locker might be a better choice considering driving habits? Arb, elocker etc.

I'd just grabbed some 2nd hand ones off the wreckers. Let us know how you get on and what you decide 8-)

Axles are cheaper and easier to replace than crown wheels.

If I understand what you wrote correctly, it started to spin up in first rounding a tight turn (read, beginning movements of a donut). You grabbed 2nd, stocked it up and stepped off the clutch to continue said donut, sorry tight turn in 2nd. Heard it break, knew what had happened, but then continued to pull 3rd and stoke it up anyway in your tight turn. Why? Why not I guess ;)

dont worry about axles, get yourself a LH TORANA, will be more suited.

I never even twisted one, let alone broke one.

Different driving styles for sure.

i drive like that a lot, but in mud and dirt where i don't have to clutch dump it so aggressive aha, or straight lines off road when recovering

pulled the broken rear axle out tonight as the wreckers said there were 2 different bearing sizes. i was quite surprised to see the axle had snapped off right next to the bearing on the cir-clip gauge...me old mazdas snapted at the diff end making it a nightmare to get the diff out of the housing

Taking that into consideration, it is remotely possible, there was a small 'fault' in the bottom of the clip groove, we see this on bigger gear at work.
