Yer it would've been a bit of a stretch of the imagination to get one in there and a whole heap of stuffing round and extra cash on an already slim apprentice budget haha! Yer that was a thought as I'm already set up where I am for a rally if I get some down time we might give it a crack! Upgraded flywheel and h/d clutch was fitted to it just over a year ago so I'm hoping the clutch will be right for a little while

Clutch should be fine just re-machine the flywheel.

This just happened to me this morning.
My brother has a couple of 100 series boxes laying around.
I might look into that option.

How much damage would be done if I drive it home like this,
about 50 klms to home?

Would the r154 fit up to the transfer case?

I believe though not 100% sure they are stronger than the r151.

Plenty of guys making big power and torque through them.

Also used on the coaster busses I believe.

If you meen what the bill was it depends if you're DIY or get someone else to do it. The other thing is how many km's on your ute and whether you can just replace the hub or if it's more viable to put bearings through it etc.

Hey mate, this happened to my 07 hilux tonight.

I've done some reading and it appears that the synchro hub will be the issue, as it was with yours.

I'm looking at pulling the gearbox out tomorrow, then will strip it down and assess. Was it difficult and did you need a lot of mechanical know-how to get it done? I've got a gregorys manual that has a run down on how to get to get the gearbox out, just looks a bit daunting haha.

Cheers,
Kane.

R151 gearbox lost 3rd and 4th gear

Has anyone lost 3rd and 4th gear and what faults were found ?

Mine just made a small clunk changing from 2nd to 3rd gear , there is no other crunchy grenade like sounds and the vehicle is still driveable in 1st , 2nd , 5th and reverse.

3rd and 4th gear have no drive when selected , apart from that there is no bearing rumble and no drug crazed monkeys playing heavy metal music inside the cases.

I am guessing the bolt may have sheared off that goes between the selector shaft and the synchro fork but i didnt remove anything yet to check.

vehicle is a 2008 KUN26R.

here is a random pic of what the selector bolts may look like

*** thanks for transferring my post in to this old thread , seems to be a common issue ***

I had a 1987 Hilux lose two gears once. Was just the selectors that engage the synchros on the pair of gears that selector serviced. Box had to come out but was a cheap-ish fix.

BillyGoatCountry - have a look in this tread. Mine lux had the same problem and did my old troopy which had the r151. Both had their output shafts and syncros replaced.

Its cheap these days to get a low km r151 out of a newer hilux that will come with a couple of updates inside... my advise is to swap it out with one of these.

thankyou . Yes sounds like exact same symptoms so i am not doubting its the same spline issue.

Do we know from what year the R151 has the upgraded intestines and do i have to sweet talk the ECU to make them talk to each other without any error signals ?

I would get as new as you could with least kms. Without going through the parts catalogue, I'd say after 2009/2010 is a safe bet. (edit: last update was in 04.2012).

To my knowledge, there are no ECUs to worry about. The speedo cable is about it (I should remember as I've had my box out 3 times).
