HELP!!! Hilux just lost 3rd and 4th

Postby lippos lux on Fri, 29 Nov 2013 7:41 +0000

Hi all, sorry not sure if this has been posted before but I'm a little bit frantic, my manual gear box in my 08 3.0l hilux has just lost 3rd and 4th, is this a farked box or something far less? Any help would be amazing,
Cheers, Tom

Can it go into the 3rd and 4th gate? Does it grind or nothing happens?

Leave the ute off and put it into 3rd, kick it over and see if it jumps forward.

I don't think wants to go into the third or fourth gate, more concerned about the gearbox I think :)

Thanks, will try that. It goes into the gate for both third and fourth but it's as if it's in neutral. When it happened it jumped out of fourth with minimal grinding. First, second, reverse and fifth are fine

Before you lost 3rd and 4th did it pop out of those gears easily and sometimes on its own?

Definitely stripped synchro hub. Seen it heaps of times. They strip the spline and just spin on the main shaft.

Thats what I was thinking Matt. Hope it hasn't damaged the main shaft.

Not really Ive had it jump out of second before from memory but that was the only time! Is there anyway I can have a look to check it? Wouldn't there be a metallic grinding noise or something? Thanks for all your help to guys much appreciated!!!

There may have been but now it will be quiet. Undo you drain plug it has a magnet on it. You will see all your pore little bits stuck to it.

Parts are not cheap for a gear box either.

No, no grinding as its not a moving joint. As in the hub is splined to the shaft and it doesn't move. They're only splined about 2/3 the way around from memory with a few blank sections. Don't know why but yeah, I'd put money on it. Not much point looking at it. It's definitely in the gearbox, not much to do but pull it down. Won't necessarily be much on the magnet either, it's alloy.

No cheap fix sorry.

Would the r151 box the 100 series even fit in there though? The car will have to be towed back from lakes entrance before I can get it out and looked at now! Haha yer I have I come to the reality that everything that has and will break in it just add 3 zeros on the end

Noting is impossible. But the short answer is no. It will not just fit in place. You would also have to replace the transfer case as it is also different

Sorry.

Save some pennies by taking the box out yourself. Fit a heavy duty clutch while your at it.
