Boxhead has already confirmed that no d4ds have dual mass flywheels!

Best thing is to order the clutch by year of manufacture or vin number.

Hey mate, thanks, if i can just pick ya brain a little more, ive bought a clutch based on year and VIN and its a 275mm clutch :? does that sound right or is the consensus that its either 260 or 270mm?

Andddd do you know the torque requirements for flywheel bolts if it is indeed a single mass? or where i can get these details?

Much appreciated mate!

if you look at my flywheel pics you will see that after 8.08 the clutch surface area has increased by 5mm
so the larger clutch plate suits the after 8.08

Thanks for that boxhead! Sorry for the doubt before but like I said, so many conflicting opinions, ie your advice was different to clutch industries which was different to my local toyota. But yeah you were definitely right in the end. Good on ya!

Spoke to the guys at light vehicle workshop at work. About to change clutch myself and lux has 150000kms and boys reckon if rear main isn't leaking dont touch it that they have had hiluxs with 400000kms and no leaks. I know on older cars if you change a clutch you should change the seal. Any one had there rear main leak on them?

We have just been geting our machine shop to machine the friction surface on the flywheel to 280mm and fiting the bigger clutches to them. Havent had a problem yet.

Thanks boxhead. I think i'm leaning towards leaving the original rear main in place if its dry. What do you reckon you would have done a few in your time?

Was it the original clutch BH. I figured that whilst mine was apart replace all wear components inside to avoid the need to unnecessarily split the lot again if another component failed. Hence why I did the cam belt at the 130000k service when the water pump let go. They had to work in the same area to take it back twice 20000ks later to get the belt changed at 150000. Sorry to jump OT.
Cheers.

Junga, yea if it is dry leave it be. It is only another 4 hrs out of your life at a later date if is leaks.

The original clutch is a toyota made unit. Some times it is branded some times no markings. The unit fitted in aus made is an Bpr or similar.

No worries got it sorted and a 4terrain on the way...

For those of you that have done it at home was there anything that you thought, shit if i did it again i would do it this way?

I have done a clutch on a 2.6ltr petrol rodeo and it wasnt too bad just heavy lifting and moving the tranny out the way. How did you guys stop the engine from rotating whilst torquing up the bolts?

Put a bellhousing bolt in and use a screwdriver against the ring gear.
And if you've done a 4wd rodeo you'll love the hilux. They're disgustingly easy.

Thanks mate, fingers and toes crossed haha

Rodeo had a 2" body lift so wasnt too bad! Might be time to body lift the ute to make the clutch install easier :geek:

Haha, maybe you can justify a bigger lift to get under it easier and a diff drop cause that's the only thing that kinda gets in the way.
What else can we get out of this clutch job?

Bigger tyres, again, to get under it easier. Diff gears so the clutch doesn't wear out too quick. Bigger turbo cause no point having a new clutch and no more power. Umm, crawler box, it's out anyway.

What else?
