Leaking inner cv boot

Hi I have just noticed that the lhs inner cv is leaking some grease it is coming out of the circular clip at the end of the boot. The boot is ok no cuts, what do I need to do to put replacement grease inside the boot? Is it possible to do in situ by undoing the clamp and syringing in some grease?

Cheers joe

Yep, if you have lost grease, just loosen off the SS clamp, inject grease and retighten the clamp.

What type of grease is required for the CV? Glad it can be done by loosening the clamp.

It's the black moly grease.

Supercrap have it.

Read the label on the grease pot and it says for CV Joints.

Castrol LMN iirc.

Try and wipe very clean the clamping surfaces, both shaft and boot.

Get a new clamp too. Bunnings now sell stainless cable ties, they work quite well if you wrap the 'tail' around some pointy nose pliers.

Wish I had read this post I started to do this yesterday after buying the grease, but found that the clamp is made of plastic like a large cable tie and is very loose can turn it around easily, I had a new boot fitted year ago and they put this plastic crap on. But as I live in the country it takes 1 1/2 hours return trip to town to buy stuff, so I plan to buy most things on one trip each week, I will buy the two sizes and keep a spare each, it seems that if they become loose they cannot be tightened up, I can understand with screw type clamps coming loose unlike a cable tie.

This raises another question sorry about this but how do you remove a ss tie clamp without damaging the boot?

So I should buy a screw type ss hose clamp not a cable tie type.

The grease ends up cracking the end of the boot, DB. Just degrease it and keep an eye out on it.
This usually happens when the grease goes to liquid because it has got hot in there.

The new strut shaft was way to thick - Monster Rides diff drop relocation brackets moves CV shaft forward as well as down to create extra relief of CV angle. Supplier said it wont be a problem... but

Grabbed a cheap banding tool from the local auto shop
Image

Looked good but the bands are much thinner than OEM and difficult to gauge how tight to wind
Image

Obviously not tight enough
Image

These bands were never a long term solution
Picked up a couple boot clamps from Toyo dealership
Image

Waited for this to arrive in the post
Image

Did a ton of reading - it appears that unless you clean the grease from the mating surfaces it will continue to leak
An exercise in patience cleaning out the grease 20 odd times with a new clean cloths to get it completely dry
The smooth edge of a allen key worked well to get the cloth inside the boot

This tool doesnt quite get the band tight enough - that gap between the crimps should be 0.8mm

Did consider getting SST 09521-24010

But at over $200 US decided to get a OTC 4722 CV Boot Clamp Installer for about 1/4 the price
Another 2 week wait...

I thought about using something like this but the thickness of the jaws would make the ear of the clamp sit a bit too high. The STT and boot clamp pliers have thin jaws and push the ear down to maintain a low profile .
Saw a couple youtube clips of guys using thin jawed end cutters - it just sat a bit proud

Having read many forums some guys have never ending problems with cv leaking.
Some resort to rebuilding the cv, some buying a new cv, one guy said he is going to buy a new car as long as its not a Toyota

Got this tool from Amazon
Fairly crude but effective

Tightened up to specification - no more leaks.... so far

Post edit: PhotoBucket images restored with imgHOSTR image hosting

Nice one DB. Looks very simple! Could you put up some more pics of just the tool please? I reckon I'll have a go at making one.

No problem mate

You can also google OTC 4722 CV Boot Clamp Installer
I thought about making one but figured it would take me a few hours of mucking around.
You will probably knock one up in half the time

P1050203.JPG

Perspective of shot makes it look wider than it really is
31mm wide
160mm in length
Mouth opening is 10mm at widest x 4.5mm
Teeth are 1.5mm thick

Hard to see in the image but I filed down the teeth to have a 45 degree chamfer to ensure the boot clamp ear slips into the mouth of the tool.

Appears to be made from hardened steel

Let us know how you go 8-)
