Re: Leaking inner cv boot

Postby wombat81 on Wed, 14 Nov 2018 9:40 +0000

Evening all. I'm currently in the middle of a 4 month half-lap of Oz and about as far away from home, my shed and tools as I possibly could be (I live in Townsville, currently in Perth). I've just noticed that my inner cv boot on the drivers side has started leaking. If I was at home I wouldn't hesitate in doing the boot replacements with new ones. But since I'm in a caravan park with limited space and resources, can anyone recommend the best plan of attack? Should I just do it, buy plenty of rags and try my hardest not to make a mess? Am I better off getting a whole new drive shaft assembly from Toyota and just replace the lot and keep the leaky one for spares? If so how much does a complete drive shaft cost? Any other suggestions?

Cheers

Bugger
Looks like you have lost a significant amount of grease.
Any clicking or grinding noises?
With a long way yet to go with a big lap I'd get new grease and a split boot at least.

Not sure how much a new CV would cost from Toyota but worth while if the old one is completely shot.
If you have time to spare in Perth you could go to a wreckers for a cv shaft but then you would need a workshop to install. Might not be worth your time and money going 2nd hand CV depending on its condition.

If the old girl has done significant km I'd bite the bullet and get toyota to install a new shaft - piece of mind knowing that it will get me another 200K or more

Nah, no issues with clicking or anything. The cv itself still seems to be fine. It's done just on 200k. Yeah, I'll get some quotes on replacing the entire drive shaft.

I got a non genuine one from Toyota in dalby(I think) for $150. Pretty easy to change with a few basic tools, I keep it in my ute as a spare on trips so when I do something stupid with the locker on a break one I can swap it on the track. I'd put in a new one and re boot the existing when back at home with a clean workspace and a load of rags

Cheers ranga. That's kinda what I'm thinking. I'll get a non genuine Repco shaft or similar and swap it over to get me through the trip. Even though the quality won't be as good it should be the easiest and cheapest fix...

Other option would be to pump in some new grease and self amalgamating tape the shit out of it. As long as you get the boot pretty clean it'll hold up for ages

Good suggestion FR. Amalagamating tape is a good bush fix for a simple boot puncture.
Have you found the source of the leak?
After market cv's are a cheap option however wont last as long as original - especially if running lifted syspension without a diff drop.

Edited spellung

Yeah that sounds like a decent first step. I'll clean it up today and have a good look. Thanks

So I cleaned it up and the boot is perishing so taping it up isn't an option. It's leaking in a ring close to the small clamp. Toyota got back to me with a quote and they'll replace the shaft for about $750. So for $250 of labour (the genuine shafts are roughlya$500) I'll get a new genuine shaft. Seems like pretty decent value, so I've booked that in. I'll keep the old shaft for spares.

As well as that, apparently I have an outstanding recall for a crossmember or something, so they're doing that too.

Thanks for the advice all.

Happy days :) that will be your drive shaft center bearing support brackets. Lucky to get that picked up

Good that you got onto the cv in Perth and not in the goldfields ... or in kunawarritji
Can be $500 just to air bag parts to some communities

Hows the other shaft looking?

The other one is ok. It is starting to show some signs of degredation but I should be right to get it home. Then I can buy the other shaft and teach myself how to change one, and I'll have two spares for the next trip.

Thanks for the help.
