Just returned from a great weekend away near Jamieson, unfortunatly 2 things happened... firstly I had to leave prior to the snow coming.. :( secondly... my front LHS brake pad failed and after a 3 hour trip home my rotor was absolutly f####d...

Upon getting it into the dealer today aperantly the other side has also chewed into the inside of the rotor. At this point I was asking why the hell didn't I know about this and how could they get so bad... short version is that I missed a service :( I had my bonnet recal a short time back and took this as my last service... I've done 16.5K of driving since and a fair bit a 4x4 in that time. So I'm reluctantly happy to wear it... Anyway... to cut a long story short(er).. I'm getting the upgraded front rotors for the 16" rims 330ml. I should have them delivered and fitted by mid week and hopefully my new bilstiens and rear lift shortly after... Once they are on I'll give you all some feedback on how they handle... so far I've found my breaks okay.. not brilliant... but okay... I do tow a heavy trailer but not daily and I drive it like I stole most of the time... if I want a rear conversion I think I'd look for the Prado rear axle (2nd hand) but will reserve judgment till these are fitted and trialled.

On the upside... Jamieson was awesome and the camp weekend was great... spewing I missed the snow, pissed I stuffed my breaks but on the upside... the handbreak is fine with my "repairs" and the kids are buggered so I get a week of peace... 8-)

Jeff, please excuse my ignorance, as youve probably mentioned it before somewhere, but what rotors are you getting fitted?? brand and cost please... Cheers TOMUCH

I have the Snake Racing rear braied line, simply because of my rear lift, the original one was being stretched... Cheers TOMUCH

Has anyone tried installing slotted disc rotors on the front brakes yet?
Maybe those combined with better brake pads will give it the improved braking you seek....

So after using the search function, I found this thread as I am looking at getting the brakes upgraded.

Apart from the TJM product, I have not been able to locate any conversion kits on the net.

Unfortunately, I don't think ACDC is around anymore to ask about how his conversion is going, so I am wondering if anyone else has had it done?

I am too scared to ask Toyota "how much" to put the same kit on the ute as the ones used in the Prado's. I think the price will give me a heart attack. Can't have that.

i just had my dbr slotted discs fitted
i didnt go any bigget than the standard size as iam running 15' rims
i have only driven home which is about 20kms with them and they feel really good
heaps better than before probably about the same as a standard now
i think they cost the company around 600

Always good to hear the company paid for it :P
Must say though after being in the trade for many years now that the rotor upgrades only make a slight difference.
Combined with larger calipers and top quality pads and higher temp fluid is really the only way to get a real noticeable improvement in braking. However the rotor replacement is still an upgrade on standard which will help.

sorry gents for the late post up on this.

My mate is the manager there, and i deal with the big boss,who is the "managers father".
i have the runstop converison kit installed in the triton and fortuner and plenty for the hilux.

the runstop rear converison kit is a jem.
they have been tested to provide a 30-35% shorter braking distance, with just the rear itself.
the rear converison kit consist of the following:

320-330-350mm solid, slotted rotor upgrade,
two independent single piston rear calipers.
cermaic brake pads.
tubing and all nessary items needed for installation.

the front generally consist of just the rotor upgrade to a 320-330-350-380mm depending on the rim size.

they also have a wide range of small 4 pot, big 4pot, small 6pot and large 6pot forged aliminum calipers.
all fitted with cermaic brake pads. they offer phonomenal stopping power.


The general pickup does the following:
Rear Converison kit 320-330-350mm depending on rim size.
and
front rotor upgrade, 320-380mm depending on rim size.

Price
i get the rear converison for $1,190 AUD.
The front $450AUD.
does not include sending price.
this is most defentially the cheapest price you will find around.

I dont recommend switching to disk brakes at the rear, the drum brakes are there for a reason.

Its all to do with the weight of the rear end and the load handling capability's. If they wherent good, Toyota wouldnt of put them there.

My TRD has the bigger Prado? brakes upfront, and thats all I need to stop it. Braking is 100% better then my 06 and 07 SR5's, so I just recommend upgrading to the prado front end and leaving the rear as it is. You want better brakes up front then the rear, because of the weight thing. Notice how all performace bikes have a large twin disk set up at the front. Thats because this is where you get 70% of your braking from. The rear isnt as important.

ktm525, yes they are abs compatable, the hand brake also works.

why would you assume that the drumb brakes in the rear is good enough?
the only reason why the pickups comes with rear drumb brake,
is because the hilux, triton, chevrolet, isuzu and what not, are all built in thailand, and in thailand,
all commerical pickups must come with drumb brakes.

its all about less tax.

the weight distribution of the hilux is about 1200kg up front and 850kg in the rear.
so it is nessary to upgrade the front rotors,
but leaving the rear stock is most defentially not going to give you any added benefit.
swapping to the rear converison kit will give shorter braking distance, more responsive brakes.
and for that i would think its worth it, wouldnt you?

I'm pretty sure the landcruiser ute comes with disks all round or at least it is a factory option, sure maxx will know.
