With the introduction ESP etc it will be interesting to see if there ends up drums all round to accommodate modular automated braking in the event loss of control of the vehicle occurs.

Having two different braking system produces too many variables for the computer algorithm surely?

If I knew exactly which Subaru calipers I need, I would give it a go.

Some interesting idea's Check out the link:

http://www.designfab.com.au/documents/RearDiscBrakeConversionInstructions.pdf

Parts Required:
Designfab mounting brackets
Nissan GQ Patrol Rear rotors DBA622 part number 315mm diameter
'88 / 89 L series Subaru calipers part No. ABP3K
They take DB418 pads (mounting bolt spacing 122mm)
80 series Prado master cylinder 80 series front brake lines
Optional: wheel bearings and seal kit (might as well replace it all while it’s apart)

Good Idea to get rid of the crap drums...
What do people think?

For those asking about the handbrake i did this conversion on my last hilux (94 model) and the handbrake is on the subaru caliper and just needs to be hooked up to the existing vehicle handbrake cable. Finding calipers was a challenge otherwise its straight forward

I'm doing the conversion but using GQ calipers, GQ rotor, custom brake lines, custom bracket and chose to weld it to the axle tube and a transfer case handbrake.

Basically. Every kit is just the brackets and you supply and modify your own parts.

Funny reading these older threads, especially when whats discussed doesn't eventuate......lol.
Rory, thats interesting, let everyone know how you get on, very interested if you get it to work properly.

Macquarie 4x4 also attempted this mod, they say they couldn't get the bias correct between front and rear,
Brake booster insufficient for the mod as well. shelved it..costing too much in R&D.
Maybe Brendan from Ultimate can comment what happened to their attempts.

If it was easier to upload photos I would show what I have got and how it's going to go together. I will be using a manually adjustable brake bias valve as 90-95% of the time the car will be unloaded. Also running 80 series calipers and rotors up front. I know of another ute that runs GQ calipers all round and works fine.

Should note for anyone even consider doing the rear disc brake mod doing this way, it will be over $1000 by the time you pay for new rotor, brake pads, laser cut brackets, transfer case hand brake kit, modify the hand brake cable, custom brake lines, proportioning valve ect. I'm doing this because I will be running 35's daily and 4 linked rear end and want to remove the hand brake cable to prevent any chance of it catching on something

hi looking at doing this conversion on my RN110R 1992 vintage with 2004 buick V6, using delco '808' computer from earlier series engines with modded chip, and modded TH700r4 for the 4X4 transfer case, 10.5 X 31" X 15" tyres

I am concerned re to much braking force on the rear though, and premature rear lockup

brakes will be as follows:-

FRONT:-
93 surf rotors (1")
SW13 calipers 4 Pot calipers with 1.78" pistons (45mm)

REAR:-
GQ patrol rear disks
Subaru 'L' caliper (single piston 2 1/8" (54mm)
Custon inline brackets

landcruiser dual diaphram Power Booster

1" master cylinder

from many brake bias calculations that i have done from many sites, it would seem that i may have ~ double the rear force that i need

from the posts that i have seen on toyota sites some people experience no problems? some remove LSPV and use adjustable BPV. others have used a combination of existing load PV sensing and adjustable?

I note that many of the conversions i have seen done in the states use monte carlo calipers which have bigger pistons than the subaru which i thought would make the problem worse than in my case

any help geatly appreciated

regards
robkeith

Has anyone found anything further on this?
All of the conversions I've found won't fit our housings primarily due to the ABS mount being in the way, on the back of the housing (Skyfab, the NZ guy with the MR2 kit, trail tough etc etc.) and the US Tacoma kit (ABS port is on the wrong side of the diff).
The Hoppers kit - not interested in paying $1400 for a couple of laser cut plates ($80), 2 rotors (maybe $250) and some reco calipers with bolts and a couple of hoses.....

Has anyone considered simply putting a Prado rear disc set-up onto the Hilux housing??
After a quick search it looks as though the Hilux housing might accommodate the Prado caliper mount/handbrake drum backing plate? Maybe my search skills are rubbish (quite likely  ) but I've spent hours and haven't found anything definitive.
I'm almost to the point of just swapping in a complete Prado rear end (cutting all the 4 link mounts off and welding leaf perches on) and fitting a Prado handbrake cable set-up. I'd prefer not to go to that extreme but it's looking more likely.

I know there have been many discussions regarding the Hilux drums as being 'just fine' when adjusted etc etc.....but sorry - they are utter rubbish! They endlessly de-adjust and after one or two decent stomps on the pedal, they give you nothing!
I know these problems won't really affect most Lux drivers but I use my TRD to tow the race car plus a lot of gear and occasionally use it to 'sweep' rallies at pretty high speeds - even with the Prado front brakes and good pads, I'm often struggling to pull the thing up, primarily due to massive front bias. On gravel roads it's useless - I have to disconnect the ABS as it makes the the car unbearable to drive.
Surely someone has found the answer by now?
Edit to add: Proportion is a non-issue as I'll simply fit an adjustable bias valve so I can dial it in exactly as I'd like.

The rear diff is a lot different from hilux to prado so the brakes won't really work without mods. Just get laser cut brackets and weld them to your current diff and mount Gq rotors and calipers with a wilwood brake bias valve..

Ok, thanks Rory - not overly keen on simply welding caliper mounts to the housing - I'd be more comfortable with the 4 bolts but obviously this set-up is offset so perhaps it becomes awkward to utilise the flange bolts I'm guessing? No doubt the bracket becomes 'stepped' and a little more complex to fab?
I don't think there's provision for a cable handbrake with the GQ caliper is there? Not really interested in anything that can't support an integrated handbrake so may have to look at a Statesman rear caliper (or similar).
