Rear Disc Brake upgrade

Postby jcarter on Fri, 23 Nov 2007 9:54 +0000

doing my weekly troll through ebay and found something interesting.

might be of intrest for those wanting to upgrade the breaks now that they have bigger wheels/extra weight etc.
"Toyota hilux 2005+ rear disc brake conversion kit, everything needed to fit disc brakes to your hilux, increases braking by 30% no drilling or welding, all bolts straight on, easy to fit, awesome braking performance, great for towing!! brake pad life expectancy 200,000km. 2 calipers per side, slotted rotors."

Rear Disc Brake upgrade

I questioned this bloke on the kit, apparently "I will never wear out the pads" but if I do I can get another set through him... :-) :-) :-)

The kit doesn't use a generic pad type.. IE WRX pad...

I dont think I would risk it.. seems great otherwise.. dual caliper either side... if they used a standard pad I'd look into this as I do a bit of towing.

Looks like quite a well engineered kit but why all the effort if its so poorly advertised? Why is this the first time we have seen it? could be very tempted bit for a diy project if. There should be a pic of the kit fitted to a hilux though.

Rear Disc Brake upgrade

I would be very careful of buying this product.

It looks very much like the 'runstop' product out of Thailand. I saw this product earlier this year and the local Vigo mechanics said that it wasn't the best.

There are a few other companies in Thailand with these products, but the reputable 4x4 shops I visited did not recomend them.

The Ulitmate Suspension is looking to develop a rear disc brake kit, they are working with DBA, so it should be a good kit. Not sure when or cost.

Cheers

That sounds more like it matt, any chance of running the kit through monsterides? count me in. I have the full DBA kit going on the front end soon as mmax's mate gets the HD cv boots organised.

GFG,

Monster Rides will definately sell products like this, as well as any other quality/reputatable stuff we can get onto our agenting list.

What are these CV's you speak of... sounds like something I need!!

Let me know of any other hilux related products you come across, we are always looking for new stuff!

Thanks

Matt, check with Mmax, his mate has a 5" strut lift and a castor correction kit that Im trying to get to fix my steering. He is making HD cv boots with ribs spaced further apart to stop rubbing. You might not need this cause you are running the driop bracket.

Rear Disc Brake upgrade

Postby Lately Lux on Wed, 28 Nov 2007 2:00 +0000

I've just spoken to my mechanic about the front disk upgrade. They are ordering the parts for me now. Pitty they just replaced the brake fluid!!

I don't really care about a bit of fluid, the 'lux stops like a taxi just before its 400 000km service!!! Thats what you get when it weighs 2300kg and has 32" wheels I guess.

I will buy a rear disk conversion when it comes on the market too.

Rear disc brake conversion...

Postby 10K on Tue, 11 Mar 2008 9:49 +0000

I have found some info on rear disc brake conversions... mainly out of the US regarding Tacoma's.

Not sure if the diffs and brake set ups are the same on the Tacoma and Hilux?

This stuff might fit, worth a look and email.

Here are some links...

scroll down 20%, on the right

also

One of these kits might be just what we are after. Some look pretty good and aren't that expensive.

Can anyone confirm if the diff is the same in the tacoma as that in out Hilux's?
Considering the strength of the $AUD at the moment I'm keen to import one... if we can confirm that the diffs are the same. Still a risk that it won't fit, but worth a try!

Any help here??

Cheers

I like the look of the last kit, seems like the most comprehensive kit. What about switching to the front prado set up too from the TRD setup?

I like that idea as well... the more braking power the better!

What about the prado rear set up?

Rear disc brake conversion...

Postby johnwf on Wed, 12 Mar 2008 6:26 +0000

Hi,

Interesting considering the discussion in the other thread. I note that the kits do include a manual adjustable proprortioning valve of the type I mentioned in that other thread. A very much cheaper alternative would be to buy that style of valve and get the drum brakes to work properly in the first place.

Rear disc brake conversion...

Postby Hilux Max on Wed, 12 Mar 2008 6:34 +0000

10K,

the diffs are the same as the hilux as I was inquiring about this very thing with the guys at LoktUp 4x4, in regards to the Detroit Locker late last year. Only difference was that we needed another carrier assembly or something like that.

In regards to the Prado front brake setup, found out today that the retail price per caliper is like $600- and each disc is about $200-

Not a cheap conversion and kind of put me off the idea.....too much money for me at the moment, unless I find a cheap set from a wrecker or ebay or something.

would be interested to hear what snake racing will come up with but if its anything like the rear disc setups Ive seen at 4x4 shows in the last few years fro the previous model hilux, they were all over the 1000 dollar mark.

I did hear once thou of somebody getting a rear disc setup to work on an older hilux with discs from some model passenger vehicle and calipers from another model. cant remember what it was thou.
