Geoff are you able to check for a bend in the axle whilst still in the housing? I would of thought it would have to be out and on some sort of spinning alignment machine or something (bit of technical speak for ya there... )

I fitted a Terrain Tamer Kit, it included a bearing, seal and collar - I dont have ABS. I was assisted to fit mine by another 'Mechanical Fitter' and collectively we have over 75 years trade experience, so I'd say we fitted it correctly and didn't damage the seals when we did so - they aren't that special.
Jake, we can check for a bent axle by removing the brake drum and setting up a dial indicator on the wheel hub flange and turning it, if the axle is bent the dial indicator will show this as the hub flange wont run true. If the hub doesn't run true, I'd strip it down and set it up in a pair of Vee blocks as shown here to get a true measure of the bend -

I will replace mine with genuine parts and sacrafice the $75 bearing thats in there now as I dont have time to piddle about with it and cant afford a failure later in the year.

Both had to be straightened. Havent had a problem since. Also I tried putting the first set in myself, and while it was always going to leak cause i obviously hadnt fixed it by then I damaged the seals on the install so they are quite fragile.

Just a heads up

Thanks for the heads up mate, good to know someone HAS had a bent axle as i was thinking it was pretty far fetched.
Mechanic is gonna send the axle off in the next week or so...

As far as i knew i was the first one that I could find to have them bent lol. Best to get both the axel and housing checked as well. Cause that was another set gone when i got the axel done and not the housing as well

Right rear axle seal leaked at 70,000km. Replaced under warranty. Leaked again at 80,000km. Replaced again under warranty, but this time they changed the bearing as well. 130,000km Leaking again.

My axle leak was good for a few months but now its back with a vengeance!
Seems to be leaking out of the ABS solenoid?
At least it's not leaking out of the drum brake like before and ruining my brakes.
Topped rear diff up with about a cup of oil.

Image

So the cogs in here would be the skid control rotor for the ABS... should there be diff oil in there?

Image

The ABS solenoid does have a rubber seal that is broken... can't find a part number for this on TOYO DIY

Jake,
I replaced mine before I headed off and found the inner axle seal to be poor quality and a bad design. I will take the problem up with Terrain Tamer when I have time because I replaced a perfectly good bearing because their cheap seal had allowed the oil to wash the grease out of the bearing.
Your oil leak will work itself round to the brakes, currently its taking the easy way out.
Measure the inside diameter of your ABS doovey and go round to BSC and they will be able to supply you an o ring, probably cost all of $0.20.

Weather in Perth is fantastic, 27C today.

Cheers Geoff,
I'm just gonna have to suck it for now 'cause i can't afford to replace seals and bearings again. Prob a good thing that it's coming out the ABS hole. When it was coming out of the brake drum i had zero handbrake as you know... thats why i was parking up against trees on the Saw Back track..

The strange thing is that it has been 3 months in between leaks

Just had the same thing with my 2008 hilux 4wd but the left rear wheel bearing went on the way back from cape york when replaced they found the axle was also was bent toyota said you could only get a bent axle from a sideward impact from drifting into a gutter not from hitting potholes or off road use. Now $1400 for a axle parts and labour I will look for a second hand axle and change it my self

I just had my rear left axle seal replaced 3 weeks ago. Now i just looked under and the right hand side is leaking from the abs module

From the above post. I have rubbed against round abouts on the right hand side when going around them but not like hard bangs.

I also don't have diff breathers installed, just as it came from factory.

Jake
did a couple of rear bearings day before christmas for mate with SR5 (bitch of a job in the garage with no press)
there should be no oil at ABS sensor as the collar that retains the ABS gear is the collar that sits in the axle tube seal
so my guess is axle seal is F#cked

Cheers Drew

Jake,
I changed my leaking rear bearing before I headed to WA and found the Terrain Tamer seal was really poor quality material / possibly the wrong size and had worn the lip off the seal, allowing oil to escape into the bearing and onto the wheel. I haven't bothered to take the problem up with Terrain Tamer, for $75 cant be bothered. I've now fitted terrain Tamer, BSC and Repco kits, all had good quality bearings but the seals were of varying quality and the Repco kit had 2 bearing lock rings and best quality seal, so will use them in future.

thanks for that. should I get new bearings or just the seals? I got a quote from toyota parts department and they quoted me $155 for the bearings and about $52 for both seals. does that sound right?
