LEAKING REAR HUB/AXLE

Postby boxhead55 on Tue, 08 Oct 2013 10:36 +0000

You have to remove the retainer and bearing to replace the outer seal. The retainer and bearing are normally distorted or destroyed when removed so you always do all three. And yep price sound good.

Terrible news. Sent the drive shaft to a place that has a press.Found out the bearing was gone and when they put it in the lathe found that the shaft is also bent which is why the bearing/seal failed. Found one at a wreckers for 220 and will pick it up tomorrow and then will test to make sure it's straight

this is from Toyota manual , basically don't press the inner retainer on so far (on ABS equipped ) , try putting a little grease on the retainer and dummy fit , see the "witness mark" .
they are refering to outer surface of the flange to the inner surface of the retainer .
hope this helps . guaranteed fix .

using SST and a press, press in a new sensor rotor and new bearing retainer to the axle shaft until length is within the standard range.

SST
09316-60011 (09316-00051)

Standard length:
122.2 +- 0.6 mm (4.811 +- 0.024 in.)

NOTICE:

Oil leakage may occur if length is not within the standard range and the lip of the oil seal does not contact to the retainer.

the new shaft has been in for a few weeks now. the axle came fully assembled already with the bearing, seals, abs ring and all retainers. didnt bother changing the wheels bearings etc. just put some new brake shoes in and all seems to be working well.

new shaft and hub assembly

old bearing (pretty sure that it is suppose to be one piece :? )

and all back together

one a different problem, last week found that a universal joint on my front drive shaft was stuffed. so had to replace that as well. pretty easy job though.

Hi all new to forum googled my problem and this post popped up
I've had four seal kits put in.. And it's still leaking mechanic has told me to get a half shaft,, been searching for over a month. I've found one on eBay but unsure if it will fit. I drive a mk6 hl2 2.5ltr 2006 single cab the drive shaft I have found is off a 2012 2.5ltr double cab has anyone got any idea if this will fit??
Thanks in advance Dave

Id double check that but from memory from 2010 onwards Toyota introduced a double row rear bearing for the rear axles.

I dont think you can fit this into older axles, but am not 100% sure.

Rod W did do some investigation into this as he was blowing rear bearings/seal with towing his carava or something like that.

I've noticed it doesn't leak when parked on flat ground it only leaks when I park it on the end of the drive which is very steep.... Been two weeks with no oil leak parked on flat ground. Though I'd test it parked on end of drive for three minutes and it's leaked again????

Raising this again.
2013 SR .Noticed some oil marks on the inside of the Driverside rear wheel back plate ,about 4 mths ago.
I just assumed it was where they bled the brakes, after replacing the brake fluid on its 80k service.(wagons only done 65k.)
So started doing my own maintenance ,Checked brake shoes etc , noticed a bit of gunge at the base of the inside backplate ,nothing on shoes or around the drum. Wheel bearings all good. So checked the diff oil ,managed to get about 150ml in when topping up.
Checked the breather all good .
Looks as the inner seal is gone very slight leak.. After reading numerous forums, seems like it happens occasionally and always the right hand rear..Any one else come across this lately.
Looking to get the seal done only.
Any reccomondations ,for a workshop .N.O.R. Perth.

Hi Mark,

We have the EXACT same story!

-I had my rear Wheel Bearings replaced... BOTH of them including seals (NON-genuine parts; from JAPAN through OnlineAutoParts.com.au... cannot remember brand but they were highly rated by other mechanics)
-I had a mechanic and use a press to put them in the axles, then I inserted the seals myself and the axles.
-Months later, I decided to adjust my Rear Shoes and bleed the brakes.
-Noticed a little build-up inside the drum; thought this was leaked/excess brake fluid from the bleed process.
-Parked my Hilux on our STEEP driveway overnight; slight oil leak inside rim on REAR PASSENGER wheel.

I assume I installed this seal incorrectly - so I will chase up a set of GENUINE seals and see how they go :D

JUST remembered a couple of points:

1. The brand of bearings (including the seals) was MBS. MBS probably outsourced the seal manufacturing? The bearings themselves are nice and reasonably priced.
2. I only had an issue with the bearing that made me do the repairs - no leaks, just a stuffed bearing. I presume my assumption about the seal being installed incorrectly/faulty, is the cause of the leak.

Rear axial seal

Postby FIRIE on Thu, 09 May 2019 8:23 +0000

Hi all,
Had my rear bearings and seals replaced as the old ones died dramatically. Also had my LSD worked while they did that.
After that the new seal leaked after a couple days, my mechanic replaced the seal.
I’m touring Tassie atm and 6000kms later the same rear tyre has oil draining from it again. I did hit a pot hole a little hard yesterday but nothing crazy.

I’m in a small country town awaiting to see if the guy here can change it for me as my tool selection is limited. Have the seals

So any ideas on why it’s leaking again,,,,hoping not a bent shaft

Cheers

Or a gen8?

Sounds like a dodgy seal replacement.
