Manual transmission noise

Postby Seaair on Thu, 13 Dec 2007 1:59 +0000

This thread was initiated some time ago and it appears others may still be in the same predicament.

There is a "rattling" noise coming from my manual transmission (05 Dual cab) - it has done 54000kms.

I was told byToyota at 40K that it is the thrust bearing and they supposedly replced it. The noise persists and they now tell me that 'it is normal transmission noise'.

Am I getting the run-arround and being fed manure?

Moreso, when comming to a holt (after a long run -engine warm etc.) there is a knocking sound from under the bonnet, which goes away after a few seconds.

Can anyone assist please.

Thanks

Mark

Forgot to include:

The transmission noise disappears when the clutch pedal is depressed.

The noise also persists especially when the engine/transmission is cold.

seaair,
i have the same thing @ 62 k and i'm told that toyota are aware of the noise but there is no fix as it is put down to noise from gear roll .
the noise is more pronounced when cold and has all but dissappeared when hot.
i dont like to comment on someone elses vehicle but i have the same symptoms since about 40k.
i'm relying on the integrity of the service manager where i bought the vehicle.
i hope this is of some helf
regards ken

Manual transmission noise

Seair, the thrust bearing is close to being the problem. It's actually the teeth of the pressure plate don't line up properly after they are worn.

I had a new clutch kit put in under warranty at around 30k I think. I now have just over 50k and the sound has just began again, intermittantly at this time. I am going to hit Toyota up for another replacement as soon as the sound is more consistent.

If you need more info on what was done pm me and I will get as much info off toyota as I can.

i have the same symptoms as you & oldrev & it started around 40k. My toyota service manager told me it was pressure plate forks vibrating which i believe was a load of bull. The gear change from first to second can also crunch sometimes although it seems to be ok coming from third to second.

Thanks for the reply Ken, Brett and Oly.

Brett, I would certainly appreciate some feedback as to what was done.

It seems that Toyota won't assist until our trucks run out of warranty.

Manual transmission noise

I rang Grand Motors Toyota again today, my ute is going in tomorrow so they can diagnose the problem again. This is what they did last time.

Pressure Plate forks were misaligning after wear, vibrating and causing noise. This was confirmed by my mechanic.

Toyota replaced the clutch/pressure plate and machined the fly wheel.

That was at around 25k, it now has 52k and the sound is back.

Grand motors number is 0755836888, you want service department at southport. My rego number so you can reference the problem and prove it has been replaced under warranty is 679JOC.

The sales guy I deal with is Kevin Fitgerald. If you have any problems have a chat to him and tell him you know Brett Hughes from H&M Geotechnical.

Hope this helps.

This time round they are going to replace the throw out bearing and pack a heap of grease into the pivot point.

I don't think they really know what they are doing, or why it's making the noise. Oh well, they can just keep replacing stuff until it's out of warranty and then it will get a heavy duty exede clutch.
