Be aware they costed me around 2300$ AUD when the dollar was at 1.05 to the USD so if you were to get these new now I would add 200$ to that price, I believe this is a fair price for this bit of kit and it truly transforms your lux, I have heard people paying the same money for just the ratios in Australia.

I've just ordered a rear diff centre and front diff assembly from a 120 series prado with 3.9 gears - paid $650 which I'm told is cheap, especially from a wrecker.

My Lux is an 05 model, manual D4D running 265/75/16s. Thing is the car came with this sized tyres when I bought it 2 years ago, so I've never experienced overly great economy etc (about 11-12l/100km)

Has anyone here done the regeared to from 3.58 to 3.9s running the above tyre size and if so was the difference around town and in economy noticeable?

Further, aside from diff oil, will there be any other parts I'll need to complete the swap (or is recommended?). I can't afford to get them rebuilt so I'll be going out on faith that the diffs are in pretty good nick (touch wood)

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has driven and compared the 3.9 ratios vs 4.1 on a manual D4D hilux with 265/75/16 tyres as I am tossing up between the two ratios. I know the 3.9 ratios bring it back to stock gearing but how are 4.1's? does it make the gearing too low? I am only asking because my mechanic mate is pushing the 4.1's and I don't know if this is the right decision, and like all of us here, I really don't want to be doing this twice. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Grant

Steve. Ive driven a mate of mine McSumWays who has done the regear and mine which is on stock ratios and the same 32'' rubber. The regear makes them feel more responsive and you can cruise nicely sitting at 100kph and not need to change down to 4th on a steeper incline. When funds permit and you can get them rebuilt and if you want to fit a locker get them to put solid spacers into the diffs and remove the crush tubes.
Cheers
Mark

Cheers! That's exactly what I was hoping to hear. I'm not concerned with things like a tight LSD or lockers as my ute is used mostly for work purposes, in fact I'm lucky if I can even go for a drive up the beach once a year.
I've been researching the process of removing my old diffs and installing the new ones, seems pretty straight forward if a little time consuming, however still as yet unsure if there are any seals and/or gaskets that I should get beforehand to replace when doing the swap. Any ideas on that?

If you have the thing apart, I would look at replacing the wheel bearings and seals on the diff. Depending how many ks and load you were carrying around before. Fair enough about lockers and LSD. For all the mucking around of doing the swap would it be worth just running smaller dia tyres if you are doing a lot of road Ks.

LOL I know, but I still want my ute to look a little mean and the factory sized tyres look tiny under a 3" lift

I'm still a bit confused. There are two e lockers on the superior enginerring website. If I get the one that says 3.9 diff gears and up will 4.1s fit straight in or do I still need the prado 120 diff?
Car is a 2013 sr

Well it doesn't look like I'll be getting another day off (let alone weekend) from work until early May so I'm looking for a mechanic or diff shop on Brisbanes Northside to fit the diffs, any recommendations?

I was quoted around $660 by a local diff shop around the corner, but they couldn't seem to comprehend why I'd want to swap the diffs around AND they didn't even think the 120 Prado diffs wouldn't even fit in the first place.

As such I'm looking for a more informed (and possibly more reasonable?) shop if anyone can make some suggestions.

I'm in the same boat Steven - so much to do, too little time.
Lucky for me a good mechanic has set up shop in town.

If I have read correctly, no one does after market 4.1's for hilux.
I'm guessing that includes this?

The rear 8" 4.1 ratio there are aftermarket options. The front 4.1 8" clamshell diff there are not. period.

Its only a factory gear ratio thats available hence the increased cost.

Ok I have had a very very quick browse through this!
2009 sr5 diesel auto 33s

I'm looking at chucking a Lokka in the rear!
Should I regear the back at the same time?
4.1s is best for my set up, correct me if I'm wrong.
Best place to get a gear set from? Or should I look at prado gears?
What's the average cost for this to be completed?

My knowledge with this is new and not thick in the head. Haha but I only want to do things once!
Thanks for the time.

ask the Lokka guys about re-gearing

I know with the Yukon Grizzly, regearing is a non-issue

and see a few posts above about 4.1's

Thanks guys. For a moment there I thought there was a small glimer of hope that JD's had finally made affordable 4.1 option for the front - mea culpa
Okay - if 2nd hand Prado auto trans/diff parts are not an option and going new is the only way forward I need to seek quote from Toyota for the below parts:
REAR: 41201 80724 (or JD's rear R&P)
FRONT: 41201 80196
Question - are the above part #'s only to fit manual transmissions?
