I recommend this upgrade with a set of DBA kangaroo paw uni directional slotted rotors
Hit 68% on my roadworthy brake test and that was with a bit of foot pressure in reserve lol

Something a bit different. Supra 4 pot calipers and 323mm rotors (the pads are bigger for these calipers so more bite). I can tell you they stop faster than the Prado units. But they are big (pic is 20" wheels)... see thread for more info. http://www.newhilux.net/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=41&t=8659

Is there any point to doing this on a 2012 sr hilux as i have been told the 2011+ hilux already has better brakes yet I still run 16's?

Yours are the same as an fj which are in between the small hilux brakes and the prado brakes. I wouldn't bother with the upgrade on yours IMO. Just my opinion but.

Yeah sweet thanks! If I come across a real cheap set through work I might do it. Going to see how it goes with a set of braided lines and better quality pads and rotors then look into this larger booster MR are doing.

You could do the upgrade for the price of a booster. They ain't cheap.

I seriously don't know why so many of you guys are going with brake upgrades just to make your daily driven hilux stop better, all I had to do was use the RDA slotted rotors and with Ferodo TQ Pads (the bendix pads initially fitted to the Hilux was an accident waiting to happen, even after 1000ks waiting for them to bed in). Went to using the Ferodo TQ pads and could lock the front tyres from the first application. I have no trouble pulling up with a car on the car trailer and back of ute loaded with spares. 2006 D4D, 15" rims 31" BFG muddies.

I don't know how you can say that. I have two hilux's one with the prado upgrade and the other with DBA discs and Bendix pads.

When I jump out of one into the other the difference is MASSIVE. I do a lot of towing (a race car and horses) and stopping is so far improved after the upgrade it is incredible. I paid 300 for the calipers with standard pads from a wrecker and just bought some new discs for 250.

Probably the best upgrade I have done.

I agree ^^^ Ive blabbed bout it before but my FJ cruiser calipers/brake setup, braided lines, slootted rotors and bigger booster manage to chirp my ABS equipped lux on 35's when needed.

Braking is phenomenal now.

Standard hilux (non VSC) brakes are near dangerous in my opinion with the lack of braking power. anything that improves stopping ability has got to be a plus.

I did DBA slotted rotors and bendix 4wd pads and it's nothing to rave on about, braking is improved slightly and less fade but I still don't think it's enough for these cars. If I had to do it again I would go straight for the prado upgrade which I will be doing in the next few weeks [THUMBS UP SIGN]

I think some of the clue though is his tyre size. From a 31 to a 33+ is a massive difference in brake terms.

Agreed Matt. Much more rolling mass to pull up.

And the brake upgrade is definitely worth it.

When your truck on 35's pulls up better than a new Rav4 or Kluger....puts a nice smile on your face

That's why I used the Ferodo TQ(thermo quiet) pads, Bendix were useless. Wife has a Prado with DBA slotted and Ferodo TQ pads, both vehicles feel very similar in pedal pressure and stopping power/ fade resistance. Yes the difference between stock and DBA with decent pads is massive. Try the ferodo's on your stocker you will be surprised.

I was driving my old lux with 33s and a half heavy trayload coming down the west road into Jenolans cave. The riad is windy and steep with hairpins, with the 33s the brakes cooked almost immediately and i had to use tge handbrake then switch into low range (no front hubs) to allow engine braking! Scariest drive of my life, also for the old bittie in the little car in front of me going oh so slow!
Anyway, i used that to concur that 33s makes a huge huge difference to braking quality

Just read this entire thread and this is definitely now on my to do list, but one question, are the 150series prado brakes a straight bolt on onto the hilux? And will the 150 brakes fit under the 17 inch rims? And what is the recomended offset?

don't know about 150 but the 120 bolt on and fit under 17 inch. recommended offset is original, changing the offset to much will alter the geometry and handling

Yes 150 brakes fit, you need 17" wheels.

Are these upgrades for the front only or is this front and back ?

So looking at this for my 2011 SR5. Do I want 120 or 150 'cruiser rotors and calipers? I can buy either. The car has 17" Speedy Landcrusier Prado Grande copies on it with 265/65/17 tyres. I realise both appear to work after reading the thread, but which is advised?
