Upgraded brakes are a must for our Lux.

The DBA 4000 series slotted rotors is the only upgrade to get better brakes at the moment together with better brake pads.

Good info Mark, Shame you did not try your rim for size on a Prado when you had the chance. I have done a bit more work on this myself. I suspect the casting of the Prado caliper might be a bit different to the Hilux if you look at the info on the lcool site about this mod.

This is not a very expensive upgrade. I priced the calipers from a wrecker a few weeks ago. They had none where I went but he asked on the two way radio the wreckers use up here. Three wreckers came back with prices of $75 per caliper. You also need the dust cover as well though. So then I rang a brake place and they said they could recondition the caliper for $45 and machine a disc for about $20 or supply a new rotor for $99.

My plan was to try and get the calipers, dust covers and discs as a package and get the rotors machined and calipers reconditioned. You'd probably get it all done for under $350 that way. I was not really intersted in adding DBA rotors etc, just the legality side of things.

Just an aside, whilst the regs don't allow grinding of brake components, polishing of components is allowed. Maybe appropriate polishing with an angle grinder and a flap wheel, err I meant polishing mop, will assist fitting....

So anyway, I was going to try and get a set of calipers, rotors and dust covers and try them for fit without taking the brake lines off and take it from there. Polish if necessary, then get the calipers and rotors reconditioned.

With this mod, part of it would be fittng the TRD Tyre Placcard which are 30.5" tyres

Very keen to see where this mod goes.

Had 2 near misses (neither my fault) on the way home tonight and both times was wishing for brakes that would pull me up faster!

Had an interesting conversation with my local ARB agent. The service manager there said yes that the Prado 16x7 inch steel rim will fit onto the larger 17" caliper. He has seen them fitted before on late model Prado's. He did offer some valuable advice as whilst there might be clearance it just might not be enough.. Any build up of mud/rocks could jam against the rim and caliper in an offroad environment. He did not recommend such a modification.
But it would be interesting to see if they fitted anyway.

Well for $75 for one caliper for test fitment, it would be interesting to see if it fitted. It would only be a 15 minute job to try them for fit Mark! If one works, go back and get the second.

Have you guys looked at fitting rotor and caliper of the previous model Prado as an alternative?

I had a quick look at the DBA website and compared the three disc dimensions

All other dimensions are identical across all three.

The 90 series comes with 2 spot calipers on the front. It might be an easier (and cheaper) fit inside a 16" rim, which the 90 series had as standard.

good stuff noodle, but you would have to see if the caliper itself bolts on the same as the current hilux...they might have different bolt hole locations.....

Good point Mmaaxx. I was throwing up another option... more so from the legality POV.
If I wasn't in my good uniform I'd go and check out the prado in the carpark at work.

Will put it on my to do list though

I am assembling all the bits and pieces needed to do this conversion (thanks for the help (Mmaaxx).
While I am at it I may as well change the flexible brake lines for braded lines. I will probably also extend them to compensate for the suspension lift.
Do any of you happen to know the length and specs of the front brake lines. I really want to have them made up before I start pulling things apart!

hey max dosen't racecam have 17' rims not the smaller 16" rim thereby he has the clearance for the 338mm rotors ?

try pradopoint.com....i have a mate that did it also...depends on wheel brand.some fit some dont

Seems like grinding the calpers is the only way to go! not sure i want to do this.

I did manage to test fit my 90 series prado rims (16 x 7) onto a 120 prado. The rims did clear the caliper ok, but the wheel wouldn't turn.... because I had a bit of mud and dirt on the inside of the rim.

So if the rim was spotless, then the rim would spin, but if you got into some muddy area, then binding could be an issue.

If the opportunity does arise and I manage to get my hands on a set of prado caliper and discs, then I'll do some more in depth testing.

So the rims do fit, but you can't get them dirty

fitted 120 prado series front bakes to my 09 hilux on the weekend as i all ready had 17 inch wheels on the car . These are the way to go the hilux now stops and has a great feel on the foot , i also used genuine toyota pads the only bad part of doing the conversion was pulling the hubs off mine were a bit tight i wish i had done it sooner

I have had prado calipers with Girling ceramic pads and standard rotors on my truck for a while now . I did not remove the hilux backing plates, just bent them back slightly. I know this sounds a bit bodgy, but it is only a small amount you need to bend it back - I just bent it by hand so I could bend it back if I ever needed to. The little hard line from the caliper to the flexible line is still hilux on mine as well, once again just bent slightly to meet the new caliper position.
I added braided lines while I was at it - I didn't want to bleed the brakes twice!
I thought they were ok, didn't really feel like there was a massive difference from standard until yesterday I drove a mates hilux with stock brakes ! I almost ran over a getz trying to pull it up ! I definitely couldn't go back now.
I do run 17s so I have no trouble fitting them on, but I ground the calipers to fit a 16 ( it will still be tight ) in case I ever need to run them.
