So will the new Hilux brakes and Rotors fit straight on to Pre 2012 Hilux's???

Yes they will.

VSC Hilux/FJ Cruiser calipers/rotors are the same and bolt straight on.

Some 16" Alloys fit, ProComp is only ones I know off. You'll have to search the US Forums for others.

Prado120 also fit which are bigger and must be run with a 17" wheel.

Main issue is VSC Hilux and FJ are relatively new so stock in wreckers would be difficult to aquire.

If your running 17" wheels just go a Prado120 upgrade as they are bigger and fit and work fine with the factory booster.

You can get calipers for $200 each, get a seal kit for not much at all, revbuild them yourself quite easily, get some slotted rotors and HD pads and you have a great brake upgrade.

I have slotted rotors of the standard size, and am actually running the 17 inch SR5 2012 wheels on my 2009 SR5. So just need to get some calipers and off we go.

Would I be better getting larger rotors or leave it?

Fairly sure you will need larger rotors as that is the idea of the upgrade (larger contact area)

Loosey is spot on....the bigger calipers are spaced out more aswell to account for the increased rotor diameter.

You need the whole package.

I have just done the Prado brake upgrade, and to tell the truth I found that there really was not all that much of an improvement, over the stock brakes that I had on originally.
Everything was done by the (Hilux Max book) all calipers and pads etc.. were reconditioned renewed and the rotors were RDA slotted and brand new.

After having everything installed I did a road test and was expecting to leave a face imprint in my dash but, I found that the pedal had a fair did more travel, to get the brakes to work.

I took my car to Jaxs and asked if they would check out the rear drums, and see if they were in need of replacement expecting the worst, I sat and waited but 1/2 an hour later the manager came in and said no that the rears were fine and they had plenty of life left in them.

He did say that the rears just needed a bit of adjustment and that was done for free,and yes pedal travel was reduced.
To be truthful I was expecting the kind of braking that would snap both my arms off but have found this not to be the case.

Never expected to hear that I like honest feedback!

I'd would have expect a big braking improvement, I would want a big improvement considering the cost involved in moving up to 17's

With larger tyres and heavy repeat braking the larger brakes will come into their own

What sort of pads are you running? I use the bendix 4x4 pads and with the slotted rotors, it was a massive difference over standard (2008) brakes.

Hi I am using the Bendix heavy duty pads on the front, as I was told they would give better performance than the 4x4 ones and as far as stopping is concerned.
Because they recover more quickly from frequent use.

There must be something else a miss.

For anyone that has had the opportunity to drive a factory hilux and also a TRD Hilux, the difference is huge!!!!!!


Also comparing a standard hilux to a Prado120......they just slow the hell up soooo much harder and quicker.


There is a very noticebale difference.

Might your booster or mastewr cylinder have a problem? I find it very hard to beleive you could not see the difference.

What's the best way to adapt prado 120 rears to the hilux rear to get rid of the drums? I will be doing this on the hilux when this seasons racing is over, just curious if anyone else has one it? Coupled with prado fronts I reckon she will pull up alright

Get a rear Prado diff, cut off the mounts and weld on leaf spring perches to suit the hilux.

You will need to use the Prado Brake Booster and Master cylinder aswell as the standard hilux one wont be enough to drive the rear discs.

I beleive someone has already done this mod

Max is the Prado Brake Booster and Master cylinder a straight bolt on job, or do you have to do some serious cutting and plumbing to get this to work.

not 100 percent sure on the dimensional difference. but anything can be made to fit.

Quick thread revival.

Nearly had an accident few days ago due to a car infront that suddenly stopped in the middle of the f!@#ing road just because his phone dropped while driving.

So, I intend to find a pair of prado 120 or similar calipers, dba rotors, braided lines and some qfm/bendix pads but its really rare stuff around here (calipers wise). So my best bet is to either get in from the wreckers in Aus or get a brand new caliper from the states. Great if someone could advise on whats the parts equivalent for the calipers on prado120. Some mentioned its the same as 4runners but unsure on the model year. Truly appreciate the advise(s).

p/s if someones wants to part with a pair of prado120 calipers, drop me a PM.

My calipers sitting on the bench waiting to be fitted are equivalent to FJ Cruiser or 4Runner 04 model onwards.

They arent as large as the prado120 calipers but are the same as the current VSC equipped Hilux front brakes, and bigger than the standard hilux ones.

Ring around a few Toyota or 4x4 wreckers. Finding a set of 120 series calipers shouldn't be too hard. B)
