2012 SR5 DC Front & Rear Diff Rebuild

Postby Skrewdriver on Mon, 26 Feb 2024 6:18 +0000

I would like to ask for people’s recommendations/advice on having diff repairs please.

I have a 2012 SR5 Dual Cab and I have been told that both the front and rear diffs are on the way out. The rear is making some noise, it is not dead quiet, but I do not have to wear ear plugs either.
The first quote I have received is $4790 for front and rear, 12 months/20k warranty.
The car has 355k on the clock.

I am based in Newcastle but will travel for the right price/quality of work.

Regards,

Peter

If you havnt already try newcastle gear box and diff at broadmeadow.

I think you have a manual? Does the noise disappear in 4th?

Failing input shaft in the gearbox will give you a noise that sounds like its coming from the rear. In 4th it's a direct drive and you don't get the noise. Thats how you know. Common fault.
I don't understand how your front diff has failed as well. On the sr5 they only partially turn in 2wd and no loads

Why would both diffs fail at the same time?
Cheers Gipsy :D although I'm sure somebody will challenge that  even Einstein wasn't certain of his theories.

I wouldn't do both diffs at once unless it's never had a diff oil change and the bearings are shot.

Plenty of low km gearboxes out there 2nd hand.
I might be wrong.

The problem with the ADD is that while it takes some load off and improves economy, it still rotates the spider gears in the front diff due to the passenger side wheel being connected and the crown wheel not spinning as the drivers side is disconnected. In my case this caused a lot of wear in the spider gear shims and gears themselves along with the needle bearing on the passenger side. Non ADD cars don't use a needle bearing, but a bronze bush instead. My passenger side axle was as sloppy as anything as a result and caused a rumbling noise and vibration which was quite noticeable. The fix was easy, just fitted a Lokka. In my case the rear was the pinion bearing, which was also easy enough to fix, but again it got quite noisy under load. I think these issues are fairly common with high mileage Hiluxes.
