Dreaded 4wd not engaging question

Postby Auquhollie on Mon, 06 Dec 2021 12:55 +0000

Evening Guy's,

New to this site, have been lurking for a while but have just signed up.

I have a 2007 Hilux invincible 3.0 Auto (UK).

Over the past year ive had the 4wd light flashing, I did strip off the ADD a few months back and noted the water ingress.
the 4wd Always engaged when selector shifted and was never a problem until this past week when it stopped engaging 4wd completely. I ordered and installed an aftermarket ADD today however it hasnt fixed the problem.

Below is what i have done so far,

Remove and clean the ADD electrical connector
Engage 4wd and confirm that the transfer box is engaging which it is.
Checked front wheels to confirm that ADD is not engaging which it isnt.
Checked the sliding collar in the diff to make sure it is sliding and locking the diff which it is.
Checked the 4wd 20a fuse behind the glove box, looks ok However i didn't get a reading at the fuse ??

Is there anything else i can try ? where abouts is the relay located ?.

Would appreciate any pointers,

Adam

Ok, So after some digging and testing im still no further forward. Ive checked the multi plugs on the transfer box switches and there ok. Ive replaced the 4WD computer module and thats not fixed it. Checked the main fuse and its got power. Checked the plug onto the ADD, its got power on 3 of the wires as per below,

Red/Yellow = 12v
Red/white = 12v
Black/earth = Earth
Red/Black = 12v
Red = 0 v
yellow = 0 v

Im assuming when 4wd is selected either of the transfer switches completes the earth connection to the ADD then activating it ?? Who knows,

Any comments or advice Lads ?

Cheers

Hi Adam
You have done a lot of work.
Have you hooked it up to techstream to clear the fault code after all that you have done?
Those kind of faults will remain in the system until cleared even after physically fixing the fault.
I'd try that first before spending any more quid on parts then go from there.

Right so i hooked the motor upto a mates Snap-On Solus Edge today and there is no way to check codes or play with the 4WD system. On the overall scan no codes were detected. Does the Techstream software go into the 4Wd system ? If so i can but the software needed.

Just a simple Bluetooth obd scanner will do most things, $20 on eBay. Scan codes, readout sensors etc.etc.
Cheers Gipsy :D although I'm sure somebody will challenge that  even Einstein wasn't certain of his theories.

Gipsy, I have a cheap scanner myself and it doesnt pick up the 4x4 system, i used a mates snap on tool (£2000+) and it doesnt have a section for the 4x4 either

Well i bought a VCI mini cable and used the link to download the techstream. managed to get it connected and all it does is check for codes on the engine, nothing more. didnt even pick up on a known code that is being thrown up on the Torque converter. Not sure if im doing something wrong ??

Did you read right through the thread? It does much more than check codes... It's the same software Toyota engineers use in the workshop to diagnose all faults. Read the first pages of the thread to see how to use it.

I think its maybe the version of TS i have, not full compatible with windows 10. Do you know if its possible to buy techstream from Toyota ? a quick search looked like you just download the software and then buy a licence however you need to register an account and it doesnt seem to work.

Toyota version is very expensive and probably only available to dealers.
Not sure about windows 10 version, I use an old laptop with win7 which works fine. Got any old laptop laying around? It works fine up to win7 but there are issues with later versions.

Adam, how did you go sorting this out?? I had a similar issue after fitting the Lokka and having the ADD actuator apart. I found that after using it for the first time, it wouldn't activate again and the 4WD light would just continually flash. So after pulling the ADD actuator off again, I found that it had driven itself past the limit of the contacts, so wouldn't make contact to drive back. All I had to do was wind the gear back a bit so the contacts were made and then the motor worm drive was able to move the gear again and it's been good since.

I have actually never managed to sort it to be honest. I replaced the ADD and it never made a difference. It’s a weird one and kinda given up on it.
