Postby Jaytiluco on Sun, 05 Dec 2021 5:12 +0000

G'day all!

Pre-ordered in May, my new Hilux Rogue in Saturn Blue will finally be arriving next week.
This is not only my first new car, but also my first 4x4. It will be going straight from the dealership, onto jack stands where it will live over the next few months as the build process takes place as I work a week on week off roster.

Same question as jimo whats the vehicle going to be used for? With some of the mods you've listed can you legally register it? Whats the thinking on Removing DPF and EGR functionality?

Your looking at some serious $. Wow. The DPF removal will be illegal. Don't risk it.

Also one factor to think about is your GVM. You putting in 70 kg extra just in fuel. Add another 36 kg for water. Add at least 20 kg for the AGM battery. That is just the start. You may end up with only being able to take yourself and no one else. I know you have have over 900 kg to play with. But it is amazing how fast it goes with the mods.

But saying that, very exciting stuff. Remember to include all of the mods in your insurance. Club 4 x 4 understand mods. (No affiliation, just found them very good.)

I believe wheel spacers are illegal as well.

These days having any illegal mods on the vehicle will cause your insurance company not to pay out if and when you need them.

Looks like a build list that you'd see on lkool-aid

Agree with the above. Its a lot of money to spend to not be covered by insurance.

@Jaytiluco what do you plan on doing with your hilux?
I might be wrong.

2005 SR Hilux 1KD - SOLD
2009 BMW X5 - destroyed by a hail storm
2012 Range Rover Sport SDV6 - SOLD
2015 Ford Ranger

No offence taken!
Single bloke living and working in the Pilbara, money to burn I guess?

I live in the middle of the Pilbara desert, about 500km from Karratha (closest large town).
I do a lot of travel out here in the harsh conditions, visiting extremely remote areas with most of it off the beaten track. Most of the modifications I have chosen are purely for self sustainability out here and the peace of mind knowing I have what I need when it's needed.
For the removal of DPF and EGR functionality, both being unnecessary items that have no benefit to the engine and plenty of downsides. Better removed than becoming a problem down the track?

When it comes to legality, I'm not overly worried about consequences due to my location. Most of its use will be off-road regardless. Warranty will be voided, but It's not as much a worry to me being an extremely popular car with many parts available + owning my own mechanical business for the past 10 years, I'd prefer to pay the money and fix it myself anyway!
As long as I can still maintain some sort of decent performance with the extra weight on board, GVM limits aren't too worrying as of yet.

Wheel spacers will only be used if necessary for tyre fitment, I'm not too experienced in changing tyre sizes so I ordered them in case of any scrubbing issues I couldn't sort out in another way!

When it comes to insurance/warranty, I feel it's too limiting to focus a build on keeping things "legal" rather than capable and reliable. As nice as it would be, the car wouldn't be what I want it to be attempting it legally.

I completely agree, it's a ridiculous amount to spend on an unprotected vehicle.
I am lucky enough to be in a position where money isn't an issue, something I'll take advantage of (while it lasts )

As for what I'm doing, read earlier comment as I am way too lazy to explain again!

I think if we're honest, none of us NEEDED to spend the money/time we have on our cars, but if it makes you happy it's never a waste of money!
Got nuts on the mods and enjoy every second of it mate, and post up pics. I still grin like an idiot every time I look at my ute (and I have a "one day" list for it that totals over 40k on top of what I've already done  ).

Or buy a Nissan Patrol Y62. No DPF and probably most comfortable touring vehicle. A cruiseship.
