I just posted an intro earlier today and thought I would get a build thread started for my new lux, which I have not yet received as it is currently in at ARB.

This is my new truck at the dealer after tint and xtreme spray on ute liner has been done.

Its first list of mods being fitted at ARB this week are:

Summit Bull Bar
Intensity AR32 LED Driving lights
GME UHF Antenna
GME XRS Connect UHF
2in OME Suspension
Side steps
Summit rear step/ tow bar
Ascent Canopy
Rhino rack roof mounted tracks - No rack yet. This is in preperation for future custom fabricated roof rack.
CAT electronic rust control system - 4 pad

Once picked up from ARB tyres are getting changed over to Cooper ST Maxx 275 65 R18.

I wanted to get a lot of the big ticket items done from day one. There are a lot of other things that will follow over time, but will probably take a while.

Looking forward to picking it up!!

Nice list of mods you have planned. Will be interested in the custom roof rack. Is that a platform or actual roof racks?

It's only designed in my head at the moment, but plan for it to be custom platform type. I want to integrate a light bar on each side at the front, directed a little off centre to maximise spread. What it to look fairly slim/ streamline.

Want to do rear fit out first, draw and fridge. Have a trip in the new year to Fraser Island with wife and kids. Will need the fridge sorted for the day tripping.

I hope to pick it up by the end of the week, and straight in for new feet. Had planned on Coopers ST Maxx 275 65 R18. I posted on another thread about any issues with people fitting this size and scrubbing. Any experience with this size?

Are there any other manufacturers producing locally available 275/65/18s ? I remember looking at them for a previous vehicle as a 'next size up' option but was turned off by concerns with accessing a replacement tyre if no coopers were available at that place/time.

For reference, heres a bloke I know running 275/70R18 on the stock SR5 wheels. Equates to just over 33" x just over 11"

Matrix Stage 2 kit with UCA's set at 2" of lift.

only rubbing he has is on the swaybar on full lock. clearas everywhere else.

I too was told the 275/65r18 coopers would scrub (which was my preference by far) so I ended up with 265/65r18 bfg.
I now see a couple ARB hilux said run this size without issue
Can't justify upgrading yet so will have to wait till mine are buggered

Creaky, I have considered this and don't have an answer for it other than coopers are a reputable manufacturer
and shouldn't have supply issues, but agree it is a risk...

Thanks Max,

It does look very close to the front bumper, although I shouldn't have that problem with a bull bar on, and look like the mud flap is removed, will have to see if the mud flap causes any issues.

Thanks for the pics!! Does give me some comfort.

I ordered them in today, so will have them fitted as soon as my truck arrives.

So thought I would post an update, felt like a longboat but finally collected my truck mid December and am pretty happy with it. I took it straight to put on the Cooper ST Maxx 275 65 R18 and immediately found scrubbing on the front mud flaps, which I expected. I removed the mud flaps that night and appears with out road test that it was ok. However I found that at the right angle going over something as small as a cross over into a fuel station that they scrubbed on the plastic inner guard, not alot but enough to be a problem.

So, I looked into a few things, without having too much experience playing around with larger tyres etc, and found some quite ups on adjusting the castor to allow more clearance between tyre and wheel arch area. So, I decided to take it to a wheel alignment "specialist in BNE to seek the appropriate advice about doing this. They put it up on the machine and advised that due to the lift kit they were unable to adjust the castor forward anymore than it was as there was not enough adjustment in the standard upper control arms to allow the wheel to be aligned once castor adjusted forward, therefore no resolving my issue.

I then spoke to the tyre shop who recommended the tyre size and advised that it shouldn't be a problem and booked to go see them, I also spoke to service manager at the dealership and he offered to take a look irrespective of me having put the tyres on the vehicle after delivery.

So it went into Toyota first and they managed to adjust the castor forward from approx. 1 deg as it was currently set at to 1.5 deg which didn't sound like much to me, but provided a significant amount of clearance. Maybe 20mm or there abouts.

I also took it back to the tyre shop (the one who recommended the tyre size but did not actually sell or fit the tyres) and they had a look at what Toyota had done and agreed with what was done, and said that in fact there might be a little more adjustment available if I needed it, although Toyota mentioned that they had adjusted to within Toyota specifications for castor adjustment, which I was happy with.

So, only one more thing to do, give it some sort of test. I took it out last week, nothing extreme, but enough to give it a go, and glad to say that at this stage appears that no scrubbing at all, still have the mud flaps off, and don't think there is enough clearance to put them back on, but I haven't tried yet either. Few pics below of test, didn't get too many, had a little one in the back seat so didn't have too much time to play.

Looks really good mate, I think the 275's were the best pick for the genuine wheels.

Stodd85,
great info on the tyre size!
I`m thinking between 265/65/R18 and 275/65/R18. Found out a Toyota dealer here in the UK has 265/65/R18 on their demo Hilxu and it ran for 10K miles with no issues/scrubbing.

Could you please educate me: Which part are the castors (what do they look like...)?

If I can convince the dealer to wind the castors forward like you did, I will put on the 275s rather than 265s.
Thanks,
Sam

Castor is an adjustment in the control arm which is done during a wheel alignment, not a part specifically. You can only go so far from the toyota specs until the steering performance is intolerable i.e. wandering.

Thanks Creaky,
used your explanation and searched & found some good posts with images.... including some on this site

http://www.newhilux.net/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=7589

So from what I understand now: by adjusting the castors to 1.5 degree positive (forward) there will be no issues with 275/65R18s and you are still within Toyota recommended tolerances?
If I`m keeping the original front bumper would that not be an issue/scrub after wound forward?

Thanks,
Sam

Sam,

It is my experience that 1.5deg castor prevents scrubbing with this size. Unsure if this will cause issues with your front bumper as this was of no concern in my situation, there are some pictures posted in this thread from Hilux Max with a hilux with front bumper still on which might give you an idea... also unsure if you have a lift which will affect the result also.

Good luck, let us know how you go.
