Check engine/visit dealer dozens of codes

Recently I got the Check engine/visit your dealer error message on the dash. Checking on my Scangauge, there were dozens of codes logged, with more coming in by the minute. I noted a bunch of them down and they all were engine (not, say, transmission) codes. A couple of them didn’t even apply to my engine (Bank B camshaft position sensor, for instance). Overnight it reset and the error message was gone.

It has now done this twice.

Given the number of codes, I’m wondering if it’s a wiring issue in the main engine harness - rodent damage, maybe?

Where is the engine CPU located?

Anyone seen this before?

The Engine/Trans ECM should be located behind the glovebox on left side.

I would get a proper Scantool or Techstream to see what codes are pending, current and in history to see if there is a theme to your issue which you may be able to trace.

If you are getting random/not relevant codes it could be linked to comms or internal issue in the ECM or the list you are getting the code translation info from may be wrong for your Hilux.

The first one I saw doesn’t appear in this list - it was Engine oil too high (or overfilled, can’t remember the wording). That was easily checked and dismissed.

I recently had something installed that ran a cable through the dash so I’ll see if the ECU harness has been dislodged.

Follow up for future searches.

It appears that it was, as I suspected, a strained wiring harness behind the glove box. I had a number of cables running across this area, strapped to the existing harness. When the glove box was closed, it pressed on the bundle of cables, pulling the original harness at a hard right angle to its connectors, creating an intermittent fault. The new cable must just have been the straw that broke the camel's back. A quick reroute of cables and the fault has gone.
