Drive train /transfer case clunk

Postby deanclarke12 on Mon, 14 Feb 2022 4:26 +0000

2018 sr5 hilux
3inch front bilstien adjustable
Remap 160hp 480nm
285/17/70 baja atz tyres.

Recently was driving in 2wd 50km/h. Heard a whining noise as if something was trying to engage. Then all of a sudden there was a rattling noise and then a clunk. I stopped looked under the car thought the tail shaft had broken. All intact. I limped it all the way home in 1st gear. The clunk was so bad it would shake the cab. Got it home suspected the transfer case. When tail shaft turns the clunk appears between the transfer and rear diff. As if a gear tooth has broken and skips with audible clunk/thud.

Inspected the 4wd actuator which was dry no water or signs of corrosion on the solenoid switches.

Anyone experienced this?

I think its time to get it on the hoist. Could be a couple of things but can only speculated from here.
I might be wrong.
