Wide Body vs Narrow Body

Postby Tony65 on Fri, 27 Aug 2021 8:49 +0000

I have a 2021 Hilux Cab Chassis SR (17"wheels) and am about to order a set of alloy wheels. Two questions:
1. How can I positively confirm (100%) that I have the common widebody Hilux and not the narrow body?
2. I am told the wide-body Hilux (17"SR wheels) has a +30 offset (as opposed to the narrow-body version having +50). Is this correct?
Thanks in advance.

As far as I know there isn't a narrow body Hilux in Australia
Cheers Gipsy :D although I'm sure somebody will challenge that  even Einstein wasn't certain of his theories.

Single cab chassis has the narrow body. At least it did for my MY16 vehicle

What is the difference, is it just flares?
Is the offset stamped on the original wheels somewhere?

My guess, and that's all it is, the wheel offset +30 or +50. I know it's only 20mm but that could be the difference. I can't imagine the chassis or body is different.

The front fenders on the wide body are wider. Have both types side by side at work quite noticeable when you look at both at the same time.

Ok I'm a bit confused here and I too would like clarification as to what is 'narrow body' and what is 'wide body'? (Just out of interest).
When I bought my Genuine alloy bull bar the toyota sticker on it said to suit 'narrow body' and it fitted nicely.
I have a 2017 SR 2.8L dual cab 4x4 which came with the stock +30 pos 17' rims. These rims sit as deep into the car as you would want to go. I can't imagine a positive 50mm rim and tyre fitting in under the car, I'm pretty sure that would scrub on full lock.
Does the pos 50 rim come with the smaller workmate?

Not a terribly difficult riddle to solve. Just have to look in the right places. The hilux spec sheet is good…

As I thought, apart from 25mm less track (1510 vs 1535) and pumped body panels there's not much difference. The track is where the +50 offset comes in. Add to that narrower rims and there you have it.

I could be wrong but I feel all the 4x4 are wide.
Big issue I have seen in the 4X2 models is for some reason the chassis at the very front where you mount bullbars is Swiss cheese. Big steel bars can’t be mounted there as they will just come free over time. (They will fit I believe but I wouldn’t like to be driving when one fell off.)
Can also cause dramas if you try to fit the wrong snorkel also as they don’t match at all. Ever seen it but have heard it has happened. New quarter panel whoops.

Single Cab Chassis in 4x4 is narrow body though, mine needed the narrow body specific bull-bar kit.

Your feelings do not match the Toyota spec sheet.

My reading of the spec sheet is the workmate 2x4 and 4x4 are narrow body including cab chassis and double cab.

The wheel offset +30 or +50 is my guess, and that's all there is to it. Even though it's only 20mm, it could make a difference. I doubt the chassis or body are changed.
