2018 SR5 Brake Shudder Problem.

I've got a 2018 SR5 with 55,000 kms on it.
It gets driven very easily, and I'm not a hard braker.
A few days ago when travelling downhill through the Adelaide Hills I experienced some brake shudder.
I wasn't loaded or towing, was just touching my brakes every now and then to stay on the speed limit, certainly not keeping my foot on the peddle and riding them.
At first it was a light shudder, but after touching the brakes 4 or 5 time the shudder became severe with the steering wheel shaking badly.
The vehicle doesn't have any brake shudder at all normally, and doesn't pull to one side either under brakes, it normally breaks really well.
It was just this time under brakes that it did this, and I really wouldn't of thought that the minimal light braking I was doing would of been enough to heat the brakes up enough to affect them badly, especially that quickly.
What's other peoples view or experience with this problem?
Is it a known issue that happens with the Hilux?
Any help would be appreciated.

Warped rotors are fairly common. Mine's had them machined once already under warranty... if it happens again I'll probably change them out for something better.
Bit of a shame really, I love the brakes and how well they work, but Toyota definitely skimped on the quality of the rotors.

I agree, I've been really happy with the brakes and how they perform, it is just this problem that is really annoying.

55k sounds about right to get your discs and rotors done, I'm on the same km and looking to do mine as well midyear.
I'm going to upgrade, my mechanic has been testing new rotors he thinks will perform much better than the originals (he has a 2018 hilux).

Have same issue again, paid for new or machined rotors at Toyota at 65k roughly $550 and at about 94k they started doing it again, they want to charge again to fix.

i had mine machined twice, and something done to the drums (they weren't round)... the toyota tech said they would never give me new front rotors under warranty. he also suggested it was cause i was driving down decent hills every day, my daily drive was flat... no hills.
Machining warped rotors isn't a permanent fix so as soon as the warranty ran out i went somewhere else and got new front rotors (asked for slotted rotors and didn't get them! but wasn't worth the hassle of making a fuss as i was happy they weren't warped any more). that was done Nov 2019
Feels like i have a slight warp again but not sure if its coming from the front or rear and its very feint.
my car only has about 75k on the clock

Interesting, I'm starting to get a faint indication of this problem at around 55,000km and 3 years old. Due to go in for service soon, and will get checked out (then look somewhere other than the dealership to get it sorted).

Its a problem that was observed with the N70. Some people had no issues, others got a set of DBA (or similar) rotors and never had a problem again.
I might be wrong.

They still do it even with good rotors like Aussie made T3. I reckon my first set warped very soon after the wheels were removed for rotation during servicing or new tyres fitted. If the rotors move off the hub rust bits can get between the rotor and the hub causing the rotor not to sit flush. When you buy new PBR rotors they stress very strongly that you 100% clean the hub face or you’ll get shudder. However they also warp from heat, especially the cheap Chinese or other similar origin originals. My second set of T3’s on my 2011 are shuddering again, and these are a lot bigger than those on 2016+, I had to pull a wheel off recently and it started soon after.

x2 I assumed people do the correct prep for installation.

TBH I havent been 100% sold on my current set T3 rotors (prado 120 size). The cheap RDA rotors I had earlier were way better. What rotors do you think you'll get next?

The original install isn’t the issue. The wheel and wheel nuts hold the rotor hard on the hub. When the wheel comes off to rotate the tyres or getting new tyres the rotor comes loose off the hub, and that is when I think you get issues. I reckon both times I’ve had issues is after the wheels have been off. Fix is to undo calipers and clean both the hub and the rotor properly every time the wheels come off.

I’ll try T2 next time. I refuse to buy front brake rotors not made in Australia. The only alternative might be Tacoma rotors made in the USA.

I’ll add my two cents...
I’ve had both T2 and T3s. The T3s are noticeably better
I haven’t had those issues with either set.

Yeah I have heard similar many time. I would buy them again as the options are limited... just not overly impressed with my current set.

I fried a pair of standard size T3 rotors on my 2011 real quick as I had fitted 265/65/17 tyres. Upgraded to TRD size T3 and they went good until the pads wore out. They were machined and put back on with new pads but I don’t think the brake place cleaned the surfaces right and they started to shudder at some stage, I think it was after a tyre rotation. I put new T3 on and they aren’t all that old but have started to shudder, again I think soon after getting new tyres.

My standard rotors started to shudder at about 40k kms. I drive down a 80km/h hill everyday that requires braking to stop you speeding down it. I put on T3 rotors on my 2016 hilux with bendix pads 3 years ago and no troubles since. I wouldn't recommend bendix pads though. I do drive my cars hard and driving through hills the brakes basically stop working after a few downhill decents from the pads overheating. Happened to me 15 years ago with another car with slotted rotors and bendix pads. I put the standard Mitsubishi pads on and they worked a charm.

Once your rotors warp shouldn't the pads be changed also when machining the discs as they have probably worn out of shape also ? Otherwise will just lead to warp discs again ?

Mine has always been Bendix 4x4 pads n all 3 pairs of T3 rotors. I’ve never had issues with them fading though. It is supercharged and does get driven hard. However both trailers have electric brakes, 4 of them on the car float.

Only ever had issues after the front wheels have been aren off and refitted.

I might try machining the pair on there and using standard Toyota pads.

Mine are DBA T3 rotors with DBA Xtreme performance brake pads.
I had been through a few different combinations prior (eg: T2 rotors, bendix pads etc) and for me these are the best by far. They were recommended by the bloke at brakes direct when I told him what I was after.
Purchased from them and have been very happy. Im now on my second set and I’d do the same again for sure.
Once they wear though, I replace discs and pads. He told me prior to purchase that those pads will give me the performance im after however will most likely eat the discs so I should replace both together (ie no machining). Can be a bit pricey for some I would agree but I’m pretty serious about brakes so I’m happy to do it. Stock brakes led me to an accident once so now I prefer to be “over braked”. I also have the rear disc conversion however I can vouch for the DBA front brake setup as I had those before the rear discs.

ps: this is on an 08 TRD hilux with the 338mm discs.

As far as the original post,

My suggestion would be, if your getting shudder then replace the discs as opposed to machining. Also use new pads always.

Depending on your setup, the brakes can overheat quicker than you think on those downhill runs. Any underlying issue will quickly become apparent be it with your pads or rotors. Even still, once at high temp your brakes will not feel adequate or smooth.
