Hi All,

I am in the market for a new ute. Just wondering if any rugged X owners out there feel the Toyota added extras are of good quality, and do not regret going down the path of driving a new SR5 and to ARB to get similar mods?

How well does the LED bar work on country roads, and does the snorkel have a decent seal to the airbox?

If I was like you looking at the new car, I would wait couple of months and get the new D-MAX V-Cross.
New dmax is going to be killer of all utes.

Doing a little more research, I can see a new model Hilux is due in August. With the 2.8 diesel producing 150kw and 500nm torque, and comes with apple car play.

Dmax is the ONLY passenger vehicle on the market with B10 rated engine (B10 rated engines are expected to last minimum 500 000km without any issue).
Hilux engine does not come even close, especially with all the DPF issues.

I’ll try to address your actual query... seeing as everyone else ignored it.

I went for a SR and modded it as I wanted it. The Toyota snorkel doesn’t seal too well, but is adequate for most. The front bar is good, but there’s better options out there no matter what you are after. It doesn’t have fantastic approach angles, is apparently hard to fit a winch to, and without hoops it was not for me as I drive outback roads a lot and I need the roo protection. Similarly the light bar is pretty good, but there’s better options out there if you actually intend to drive in areas that need extra light. The rock sliders are a top notch item however.

The extra $25k over the SR isn’t money well spent to me. But the difference over the SR5 is less. In the end it’s a personal choice.

Appreciate the advice greenie. Think you raise a valid point regarding the SR model. I did some figures, and it works out more cost effective to get the Rugged X over modding a SR5. Just was not sure if the Toyota mods were any good.

Gday Etheral, I’m also looking to update the old rig. I was looking at the up spec luxes... but a wise man informed me you can’t legally mod them as they are already modded.... I’ll try to find the exact message.
So be cautious, especially with the winch bar only fitting certain items after buying more $ Toyota bits.
I’m thinking 2020 Hilux update or indeed the new D-Max

Here is a snip of the conversation, “ legally you cannot modify a Rugged X because it is built as a Second Stage Modification built post compliance by Toyota. Just thought id let you know as youd struggle to find insurance and if you did it would be a get out of jail card for them if you ever needed to make a claim.”
I’ve never 100% confirmed, but no reason to doubt the advice.

Interesting but if this were to be true that would mean NO mods would be allowed post compliance???
Not to discount the above but it is worth further investigation, maybe start with the state transport authority.
Let us know if anything further is discovered.

That may be true in backwards states like NSW and VIC

Still worth checking the facts, compliance is a federal thing, (Australian Design Rules; ADR) but backward states (such as WA ) might do their own thing on regulations
And if they do, you will strike issues in other states if you take your vehicle over to the 'mainland'.

10k for stickers and an ugly bar....better off getting an SR and dropping 25k on it and having a unique personalised ute, not just another sheep on the road.

Yep

The new Hilux goes heaps better than the previous Gen with the DPF issues. The engine updates are a massive improvement and the fuel economy is much better. I am that impressed that I bought a new prado as well.

I am not a fan of DMaxes as they are built flimsy and cheap, look good, go well but just cant handle being driven out west. Great for the tar and the odd squirt off road and tow pretty well.

Oh, you mean like a 2-4" lift with a muzz bar?

Hey guys, new to the forums and 4x4ing in general, picked my Rugged x up not even a week ago it drives incredibly smooth, 9speaker system and the leather seats just complete the drive. So many positives yet to go offroad still taking it easy for the first few thousand kms to allow break in.
Just wondering Is it unhealthy at this stage for the ute to not be driven for a couple weeks at a time? If not, what is the ideal operating I can have the old man do while im away? E.g a 90min round trip every few days perhaps?

@spicy paydirt I would not worry about it, factory to Australia is longer than a few weeks.
