New engine at 90,000 km's!

So I posted a while ago about potential injector issues or bad fuel, turns out there was a hole in one of the pistons, oil coming out of a cylinder and oil coming out of the turbo so Toyota were generous to give me a new engine, lucky me eh. At least it's an engine from a 2019 Hilux.

As disappointing as this news was they did so while the vehicle was 14 days out of warranty so all credit to them for stepping up albeit how long it actually takes them to make a decision, process took 4 weeks from when they diagnosed the issue to me driving away.

They don't know how this happened, they had never seen one die like that before so they tell me so who knows.

Vehicle is an early 2017 SR5, had many DPF issues initially until that was replaced at around 60,000 km's. Towed a 2.5 tonne caravan every now and then otherwise that was it.

I cant tell for sure from that photo , but it looks like a crack leading into the hole. Maybe a defect with the pistons ceramic coating , maybe caused by over fueling or overboosting?

The question is, did they supply a brand new crate engine or rebuild your old engine to make it new again?

How interesting. Yes, manufacturers will come to your rescue when you are just out of the warranty period. The ACCC stepped in on this a while ago. Question remains though is how long is the grace period.

Yep, brand new crate engine. Was going to cost more with labour & parts to rebuild the engine so they threw in a 2019 engine.

I'm hoping the newer engines don't come with the DPF issues...

Unsure how it happened, I'm not mechanical in the slightest. Even they weren't sure.

There are a couple of major issues with the GD motors.

#1 the pistons have been made from rubbish and there are known faults with the castings. The pistons break and wreck the motor. There is a bulletin (#1929) available from Toyota on ths issue.

#2 The glowplugs tips break off and destroy the motor. (#1928)
Caused by condensation build up in the intake (in humid conditions) and on first startup the thermal shock shatters the glowplug tips.

Both well know issues with them and Toyota aware

The earlier KD engines have been fine. Only been an issue when injectors have failed or people used a crappy plug in ECU to get more power and the AFR where all screwed up.

90,000 on the engine. Dealer was Yarra Valley Toyota. They stuffed me around with the DPF issues early on but didn't muck around with the engine replacement, not the dealers fault and it happened and was just outside of warranty.

Mine is a company car so no ecu plugs or anything. Just unlucky I guess. No humidity issues as I live in Melbourne. Car occasionally tows a caravan.

How can this failure be attributed to installing a chip?

Maybe it can't but I does reveal an inherent issue of potential failure which could/would be magnified by a chip.
It's your choice but rest assured if there is any evidence of engine mods, the Toyota warranty is in jeopardy.
