Hard Lids and Tub Liners

Postby AC137 on Thu, 12 Mar 2020 10:12 +0000

Looking for some advice form the genuine Toyota hard lid owners who have a tub liner installed. I am going to get a genuine tub liner but haven’t decided whether to go over lip or under lip because of the hard cover.

I love the idea of the over lip liners as it protects the edge of the tub but was wondering how it would go with the hard lid already installed, would I need to cut sections out for the hinges and locking tabs? Or is it just easiest to go with the under lip liner?

If any owners have photos of how their over lip liner and hard cover is installed, would love to see. (There is also the possibility of adding an ARB canopy down the track, would this also have implications with the over lip liner?)

Thanks in advance!

As far as a tub liner goes, don't waste your time or money. When being installed, if the swarf is not cleaned out properly, it introduces rust, and the steel sweats due to the lack of airflow.

Invest a little bit more and get Rhino Lining/Speedliner/Line-X, a spray on/roll on tub liner.

Chemical resistant, and will stand up to all sorts of abuse.

I had my 2012 Hilux done when i bought it, and it was $800 for a dual cab

If you are going to run a hard lid, most don't fit with over the lip liners
Personally I don't like to look of spray on liners, its a 5 minute job to pull your tub liner out every now and then to clean under it
You can also wax or lanolin under there
Good luck 8-)

Don't waste your money, just remember it is a ute, and if it gets damaged you can always spray it with rhino later.
Cheers Gipsy :D although I'm sure somebody will challenge that  even Einstein wasn't certain of his theories.

My 2011 had a genuine over lip liner and hard lid when new. They butchered it a bit to lift the bar thingy and cut holes in the liner for hinges, locks etc. I took it all off, threw the hard lid and bar thingy away. Cut the liner down so it is below the top and fitted a canopy.

If it was me I’d get an under lip liner, they work well and they are cheap. Just take it out and clean any swarf out, and put some sealant or paint in the screw holes (if any) before re-fitting. Mine has a rubber holed mat on the bottom and I carry Chevy engines, gearboxes etc. Never had an issue. Tray is still like new under the liner except where the bar’s holes have been elongated.

I just pulled my liner out. It was a genuine Toyota. I wish I had never had one. They weigh a bit, take up a stack of room! Its stripped off paint all over the place and started rusting the tub. Get a spray on if you really want one or just a decent rubber liner on the floor will do. Don't waste your money.

Had utes for 30 years only one i fitted a tub liner. Never again. Instead i use a special type of carpet matting called flowmax. Have a look in my shed for a couple of photos

I’ve had one in every new ute I have bought, 2000 VS, 2003 VY, 2005 VZ, 2010 SR5 and 2011 SR5. Wouldn’t be without one, never had an issue with them. All my cars are parked inside though and do not have the tub open to the elements so that might make a big difference too.

Other option is a bedrug? Basically a foam backed plastic carpet liner. Won't damage the tub, stops stuff sliding and is nice on the knees if you have to climb in. Had one in my tub before I went a custom canopy.

Personally now though, I'd just raptor it and be done

This is what I have. Pics are in my build thread. My only criticism is that there's no protection between the hard lid and the tub, and it has started to wear the paint in a few spots.
