New hilux VS prado vs lc79

HI all,
I am new to the forum and have a couple of questions. I largely do dune bashing and sea trips with a lot of salt flats. No towing.

Firstly, is the hilux underpinnings are the same as the prado or is the prado more robust.

Second, I found a sr hilux 2.4 with traction control and a diff lock, and a 2.8 sr with abs breaks only. I think the 2.4 is better option.

Last, is it worth the extra pice to get lc76.

Drive them all mate, it's really your choice. Hilux and Prado share some parts but they are built for different purposes. One isn't necessarily stronger or better than the other.

The 70 series is something else. While it looks tough, it's a time warp back to when Neanderthals roamed Europe. You can still see them often driving 70 series on big 4in lifts and 35in tyres. They are slow, noisy and while good at carrying loads, can be a pig off-road unless you spend some $$$ on suspension etc. I dread getting into my works fleet of them.

So best advice is to drive them all and see what suits you.

Can you still get a Prado with a decent petrol engine?

The three vehicles are completely different. Firstly two are utes and the third is a wagon. I think you need to decide which you want.

Then decide if you want to buy a POS designed 30 years ago that drives like a shopping trolley or buy something comfortable.

Really these vehicles are sufficiently different they shouldn’t even be in the same conversation.

Thank you all the reply.
My reasoning is that I only going to get one car for the next 10 years, so I want something that will last offroading on a weekly basis.

My current car is a swb pajero 3.8 manual and want my next car to a manual. So my only option is one of the apove.
Going to sea with fishing gear and wetsuits do stink the car and been thinking hard about a ute.
The Lc76 is on the because of resale value and it is a dream car. "having owned one swb 86 model" the new one are comfortable compared to that :).

Make sure you sit in and drive the 76 first. I considered one (even with having to spend the $ on an auto conversion as not interested in a manual) but they do not have a comfortable seating position or much leg room. It was like a Pajero sport where your legs are pushed together by the console and armrests making your nuts claustrophobic.

I did test drive Lc76 and it is nice not great but it does have that sold feel ( I will rebolster the seats foam for 1000 aud give or take) . The new hilux was impressive specially in NVH department better that the ranger in sound insulation.

OK what about if they both were the same price.
2018 Lc76 full op red color ( people here only like white and brown) or 2019 sr5 hilux 2.4 white.

I’d buy a Y62 Ti Patrol over either of them, I was almost tempted at $63k drive away a few months ago. Next choice maybe a JL Wrangler 3.6. Both of these are auto only though I think, might be able to get Wrangler in manual in some models.

How much is the 76 Series? Personally I’d buy a GX 200 Series over one but there is no way I’d pay the $20k or so more than the Y62 for it. For the same $ hard choice.

I haven’t driven a 2.4L Hilux to comment on it compared to a 76 though but surely for the same price you’d have a 76?

If they were the same price I'd have the 70 series hands down, but that's mostly because they remind me of the leaf sprung live axled diesel I learned to drive in way back when. It's a moot point though because, at least here, you can drive away in a Hilux for mid 40s and the 70s cost 80k. Second hand prices for the 70s are ridiculously high too. And the 70 is going to be worse in many situations, with the places it's better being in pretty interesting off road and towing. If you don't tow and are driving on the beach I'm not sure there's any advantages to the cruiser for you at all.

I am so glad I don’t work in customer service, you must have some pretty ridiculous conversations with customers.

Haha that LC76 is nice. I imagine it hasn't passed a swerve test with that high COG... still looks good. Might grab so police attention though

Do the front tyres rub much?

Same here have y62 any day . Great price and great car . Fuel consumption isn’t as bad as people make out
