Thicknesses and dimensions for aluminum tray

Postby laguardia_arg on Sat, 08 Jun 2019 11:06 +0000

Hi. Greetings from Argentina.
My name is Santiago and I own a Hilux 2016 dual cab.
First of all I apologize for my writing, my English is not good.
I work with dogs and at this moment the box (stretcher) of the truck is closed with a fiberglass canopy, which takes away the possibility of carrying loads. And because in this country there is nothing similar to what you know as UTE TRAYS. I am starting the project in CAD to build an aluminum tray myself.
The tray will be 180 x 180 mm although if the regulations of my country allow it I would like to take it to the 205 mm long that would be the length with the bumper.
Now, my specific question, since I am starting the design, is. What diameters and thickness do you use for the structural aluminum of the tray? I am sorry to use 70 x 40 x 3 mm for the 4 perimeter and 2 central, with 50 x 20 x 3 mm for the transverse. What do you think?
I would appreciate any photo or diagram of the structure.
Thank you very much and again, sorry for the inconvenience of having to understand me.
Greetings.

Hi again Santiago

Your English is totally understandable.
Have a look at these threads
https://www.newhilux.net/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=24996
https://www.newhilux.net/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=24173
There are many threads on trays builds but most are steel. The overall dimensions should be the same for your purposes

https://www.newhilux.net/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=86&t=17386
Hope these help

Are you planing on building a dog cage on the tray?

Thanks for the response and the advice. What worries me is the thickness of the aluminum to be able to shit 500 kgs.
I read the threads that you recommended me and if I continue with doubts, consult them.
Again, thank you very much for the help.

Hows the plans going?
I forgot about this thread here:
https://www.newhilux.net/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=7410&hilit=building+steel+tray
You could also try sending forum member packeteer a private message - he built an aluminium tray and still visits the forum. You may have already seen he used 3mm

Anyone else built an ally tray?
