Hilux outsells Holden

Postby HK1837 on Wed, 17 Apr 2019 6:45 +0000

I was just looking at the (fantastic) news that Nissan are bringing the Titan to Australia as factory RHD as early as 2020. Whilst I'm not holding my breath on it, in the article it says that in February 2019 Hilux by itself outsold ALL Holden product. Whilst this is a very sad fact (remember GMH once had something like 65%+ market share in Australia and exported to dozens of countries), it shows you the love of the ute in Australia especially the Hilux and the Ranger which was about 6-700 behind Hilux.

The Nissan case is based upon them selling about 100000 a year in the USA, and if they tool for RHD to sell to Australia they can also sell to South Africa, Thailand, UK and a few other markets boosting the numbers by over 10%, which means a fair bit to Nissan, but to Ford and GM it is a pittance as they have a far bigger slice of the US Truck pie. The Titan has a 5.0L Cummins V8 diesel and the 5.6L V8 EFI that is in the Y62 Patrol. I notice Harrop have a low boost supercharger for the Y62 that will work on the Titan, gives over 350kW and 638Nm measured as AWD at the hubs. if the Ram1500 sells for under $80k driveaway here after conversion, hopefully the Nissan Titan will be in Hilux SR5 and Ranger XLT territory, under $60k. Here's to hoping.

Those are converted and mainly Titan XD which are bigger, like a Ram2500 which are also about $130k as a converted vehicle. The point with the Nissan Titan is if happens it will be factory RHD, like a Mustang. I know they are ugly (but so is the new Hilux!) but they are a ute with good engines, strong transmissions and are not huge, as a dual cab less than 400m longer and about 100mm wider than a Hilux or Ranger. If it happens this will be the affordable solution to tow 3000kg safely and legally.

If the Nissan Titan comes in at hilux prices with a diesel, I’d sell the hilux and get one.
By Nissan doing factory right hand drive conversion the price would be way cheaper than an aftermarket company doing it.
But realistically I recon they will be around the 100k mark,

I can’t see why they’d be $100k. The Ram1500 has probably $20k of Walkinshaw local content for the conversion and they are $80k. You can buy runout Ti Patrols for about $65k too. I reckon a Titan factory RHD would be $70k. The best one would be the V8 Hemi like the Patrol, but even the V8 diesel would be a decent thing.
