Fridge plug wiring back to the tub

Postby Markdavo on Thu, 07 Mar 2019 12:27 +0000

I have the 2016 SR dual cab with tub and a Flexiglass Flexitrade canopy.

I have an Engel 45lt fridge which I want to put in the tub and run off a plug, either cigarette lighter or 12V socket type mounted on the capony interior. How difficult, or easy, is it to run some simple wiring back to the tub?

Thanks,

PS, just if you are wondering, at present the fridge sits on the floor once the back seats are up but I need the seating.

Easy as mate
Just run it out of the engine bay down the chassi rail and then up into the tub
I fitted a socket down by the tail lights there is plenty of space between the inner and outer skins

If it is like the 2005-2015 you should be able to run up behind the tail light and into the tub without drilling any holes. I just pushed some red/yellow/green tongue plastic strip up the rail from one of the slots up near the front and it came out at the back of the rail right under the tail light. Just make sure you use a double insulated figure 8 of 10AWG (5-6sqmm) and put protection over it where it enters and leaves the rail. Put a fuse on the battery end like 20 or 25A to protect against short circuit.

You can buy an Engel socket from most auto electrical suppliers that will take the standard Engel cable.

Thanks both of you. I had a quick squiz along the chassis rail and it looks like a piece of ease. I'll leave a draw wire in the chassis rail for future jobs.

Cheers, Mark

Here is a link to a build where I've asked where the wire had been run to

I think it's easier to enter via the front corners rather than the rear/taillight corners, then distribute under the tub lip.

Do you have a picture of these front corners? Are these the drainage holes?

No pic is really possible and not drainage holes. You can gain entry from inside the tub lip, it's a sharp corner to a channel inside the tub wall-cavity and drops straight through.

If you can get a plastic tongue from joining flooring, you can use this to push through until it sticks out under the tub then securely fasten your cabling and pull it back inside. Or use a decent fishing line and sinker, dropitin and jiggle a bit until it falls through.

Sorry to bring up a sorta old thread, but stoopid question - do I need to run an earth all the way from the aux battery to the tub? Or can I just earth it to the chassis somewhere up the back? I'm just going to finally power up the tub so I can put the fridge in there rather than the back seat! two kids now has forced me to stop procrastinating

Cheers!

No Just find a good earth closer to your fridge
Make sure you fit a fuse at the battery end in case you get any chafing long term

Best to run a 0V /-ve lead rather than relying upon the chassis. It is easier to buy automotive figure 8 that is double insulated too. You can still attach it to the chassis at the back in addition to the OV lead if you like but will make bigger all difference if you use a decent size cable.

I said run the 0V wire, and if you like attach to the body in the back as well. Not one or the other.

Sorry mate, not saying you’re 50c each way, I meant I’ve got two responses both different.

Appreciate your input mate, it’s a good idea

I just ran a fused +- wire from the battery to my tub into an Anderson plug which my fridge plugs into.

Yeah I’ve now done the same. Figured I’m running the positive anyway, may as well run the negative as well. Is there much benefit to using an Anderson plug instead of the ciggie plug that’s already fitted to the fridge lead? I mean it’s a better plug, but then I need one to plug it into the missus car occasionally anyway, so would need two leads or an adapter.

I also went with the thunder power distribution box... figured it was just neater than making one myself which would’ve cost close to that anyway.

I ran dual core all from the engine bay alone chassis to the tub used a cable gland to protect cable going through the side of tub.

I have a waeco fridge and bought a waeco power cable with Anderson plug attached instead of cig socket as I found Anderson connections are stronger and won't unplug due to vibrations
