Considering an auto for the next one. I would be interested in a discussion of pros and cons manual vs auto.

While it's not a race car, I don't find the D4D underpowered at all, but I used to have a 3L GU patrol so that's probably why.

I also don’t get the whole attitude about smaller Diesels. Maybe it does come from that horrible athsmatic ZD30. Today’s engines however are a whole different matter. In fact the “little” 2.8L 1GD pretty well beats the daylights out of the larger capacity engines of old, such as the much revered TD42 found in the GU (which everyone thought was fantastic). And then there’s the newer diesel V6 in the Amarok Ultimate.
Anyone care to tell me again how sub 4.0L diesels are underpowered?

you are a dreamer and have no idea . Tell what does a hilux put out ?? I know because I had mine on the dyno stock and it was about 90 kw . Not what Toyota tell you . My patrol on the dyno puts out 185 kw and would rip a hilux in half way . Iam open to the challenge any dayggreenie wrote:ktm300 wrote:Would like to see the power outputs of a 2-8 compare to my 4-2 ?
Well let’s have a look shall we?
At factory tune...
2.8L 1GD makes 130kw and 420Nm from 1400rpm (manual)
4.2L TD42 makes 118kw and 330Nm from 2000rpm
As we can see the “pissy” 2.8 beats the pants off the mechanically injected Nissan TD engine. More power and more torque at lower rpm. Add an exhaust and remap and it will pump out 600Nm and 180hp atw. More than you’re ever likely to see out of the old Nissan.
HK1837 wrote:We'll see how long the 2.8L Hilux engine lasts at 600nM and 135kW (180hp) at the wheels, especially the clutch! And it'll still get blown away by a V6, let alone a Supercharged one! I bet a good old 4.2L TD Toyota or Patrol will be happily chugging along at 350,000kM. I doubt a highly stressed D4D (as in powered up for big numbers) will last half that.
I'm not picking on Hilux D4D's in particular BTW, just any of the little highly strung diesels to me are not really suited to heavy towing especially of you expect a long life out of them. The replacement for my 2011 when it gets a bit older will most likely be a Hemi V8 Ram, it will easily tow 2500kg every day and costs $79990 driveaway, not that much more on the road than a V6 Amarok or top of the range Hilux or Ranger. I doubt it'll use that much more fuel than the competition either towing.
Gipsy, V8 Patrols aren't twice the price as a Hilux, they are about the same price, and loaded up both will get up around 15-20L/100 towing. Different class cars I know but similarly priced.
$67990 driveaway for a new Ti:

A new Rogue Hilux is about $63000 on special.
