Only getting to 4th gear in low range.

Postby Instroalf on Fri, 04 Jan 2019 6:17 +0000

Hi all, first time poster.
After a life of having Manual 4x4’s I finally purchased an auto SR5.
I’ve noticed however that when in low range it tops out at 4th gear, given my main use is on the beach this is quite speed restricting.
Firstly, is this normal?
Secondly, if it is normal is there a cheat/fix to allow it to go into 5th and 6th?

Also while I’m here, is there anyway (cheat/fix) to get the rear diff lock to engage in H4?

Did you Push your gear stick forward a couple of times in sports mode to change it to S6?

G'day, welcome to the forum.

I have a manual but with lower tyre pressures, I generally don't need low range on sand. What tyres and pressures are you running?

I believe Buds Customs sells a fix for that. Ring them first to check for stock before ordering.
I might be wrong.

I also did notice this in my SR5, in some cases it was annoying as the beach changes from soft to hard sections.

I found myself constantly switching between H4 and L4. i just assumed this was a standard thing Toyota lock out 5th and 6th gear in low range.

Would be interesting if there is a fix / mod that can change this.

Whatever you do don’t use H4 on sand with an auto. You’ll cook the transmission fluid.

Hiluxxury, I run 17psi for most beach work mate. I just use low range so can have the diff lock in and all that extra torque incase I need it. It would be great to be able to use the diff lock in H4 wouldn’t it?

What kind of speeds are you getting to to want 5&6 low? I’m guessing these are ‘overdrive’ gears (in high) so that’s why they’re locked out- maybe risking tranny damage otherwise, bit like towing in top gear.
At 17psi I’m assuming it’s fairly hard sand?
If you take your foot off the gas, do you roll to a gentle stop or pull up quickly? If the sand is that hard you probably barely need 4wd, let alone low range?
17 would be pretty hard pressure for the beaches near me, doable but working hard. I usually run 12, but then I’m not doing a speed that would need 5&6.
