Genuine Toyota heavy duty alloy tray

Postby Roam82 on Mon, 24 Dec 2018 6:33 +0000

Hi all, thinking of putting a genuine toyota heavy duty aluminium tray on my 2017 sr5 dual cab. Would anyone recommend these for offroad use? Do they rattle much on bitumen?

Cheers!

Where are you located?
Dutch in Newcastle make some good trays that are fully welded and have nylon bushes hinges and locks so don’t rattle much. If you plan to load up lots and tow a decent load you really have to use alloy as a steel tray may see you snookered with weight. If you do neither then steel is good as Ashy says but remember these newer diesels are under-engined so you may want to stay as light as possible

I reckon alloy trays are horrible, they rattle, stuff rubs and make black stuff, you can't just sandblast it and make it nice again many times, and the worst is. When you try to tie stuff with ratchet straps, the bloody sides cave in and your load comes loose. Don't go there mate, you can get a nice steel one with timber or plate floor for a couple of bucks extra.

Alloy can be fine - if it's made properly, and most aren't.

The Toyota branded one is better than some, but to call it "heavy duty" is stretching the truth a bit.

Depending on where you are, try Aluminium Custom Engineering in Newcastle, they make a heavy duty, in the true sense of the word Ali tray. A company I used to work at had them on there utes as gas delivery ute, carrying G size bottles around, and they were very thick in the floor, 4-5mm from memory.

IF your still concerened about the floor getting flogged out, buy some conveyor belt, and throw it on top. Two functions: It will stop the floor getting destroyed and if your carry stuff in the back, it makes everything legal as far as load carryng/friction material goes.

Does anyone have any idea what the weight difference (approx) might be between the Genuine Toyota General Purpose alloy and Heavy Duty alloy trays? It seems the heavy duty is approx 160kg but can't find any info on the general purpose tray.
