Odd mix of tyres on 2nd hand Hilux

Postby Markdavo on Mon, 13 Aug 2018 5:27 +0000

The Hilux I just bought has 4 different brands of tyre with tread depth ranging from 6 to 10mm. I think the former owner, or the dealer, must have done a swap before the sale. I saw at the first inspection and didn't think anything of it because the price was good (had been looking for 6 months) but friends tell me I should start with a new set all the same.

What do you think?

Cheers, Mark

I run two different brands on my truck. Both are brands are muddies. My reason for this is when i needed to buy tyres. I only needed 2, so went for something reasonably priced.

I would buy a new set, if i was you, purely for the tread depth. If they aren't the same terrain (all ATs or all MTs) i would buy a new set.

When i buy tyres next, I'm going to buy a full set so, hopefully, the wear and weight and stuff is even.

Just my 2 cents.
The MudBug: 1999 LN167R, 3.0L 5L, N/A diesel
The "BushRanger": 2002 KZN165R, 3.0L 1KZ-TE, turbo diesel

Id be having a talk to the guy that signed the safety certificate for the dealer, if he missed something as obvious as miss matched treads on the front axle, what else didn't he bother to look at?

I was looking for a car for my son a few years back, seemed ok for a cheapie but the front tyres were different to eachother and the steering wheel covering was split and chunks were missing, so i pointed it out to the sales guy and he told me that anything not legal would be pointed out by the guy doing the inspection and rectified.

When he called to tell us it was ready for pick up we went in and first thing i saw were the same two tyres on the front and a cheap lace on steering wheel cover from the 80ies on the wheel.

When i noticed it and said i want to talk to the certificate issuer, he immediately said i dont think we should go ahead with this sale, opened his top drawer and had the exact deposit amount ready just to pick up and handed it to us.

Needless to say, that car yard has closed now.

Thanks for your replies. It is booked in to have a complete new set of tyres fitted tomorrow, Bridgestone Dueler A/T 697s, recommended by a one of my bushwalking mates who got 80,000k from his first set and only one spike in 3 years.

Cheers, Mark

I just got a set of those for mine. $200 a corner fitted. Pretty happy with them for the price.
