How often does your hilux do a burn off?

Postby ReeceK on Sat, 11 Aug 2018 12:22 +0000

Hi all,

just wondering how often everybody else is having to do a dpf burn off, I do mostly highway driving and am doing a burn-off every 330kms (According to my trip odometer), is this normal? it seems to be doing it more often then it should, its also starting to take up to 1 hour for it do to its burn off at highway speeds which is definitely not right. just wondering if its just my hilux before I take it to toyota as it seems to be a never ending battle with my lemon/n80 model.

Gday reecek
Mine does a burn at roughly the same distance but it only goes for about 30 - 35 min.
I've got a 2017 with 35000k & hasn't had the lalest update yet.

I do mostly highway driving and it does a burn around every 300km and takes around 30 minutes.
I set the B trip meter every burn so I know its coming up and make sure I will be doing a long trip when its time.

Thanks for the info, Seems like such a hassle with these dpfs, would consider deleting it if it wasnt a massive fine if you get caught. I drove a contractor's n80 hilux with a dpf delete at work and it was like a whole new car, guess I'll wait till its out of warranty first

Mine does them every 300-350ks.
Usually takes around 10-15 min.
Usually does them when I pull up, even after driving 2-3hrs highway speed.
So then I sit and wait while the Precious car does its thing. Once the revs drop back to idle speed I kill it. Then sometimes upon next startup revs rise and starts the burn off again 5-10 mins. Ridiculous idea not having a manual button, surely Toyota should retrofit.

Agreed, most annoyong thing getting home after work and then it wants to go on a 20 minute run on the highway, I usually just turn it off anyway but im worried that in the long term it will kill the dpf

You see what we put up with as owners and drivers?????? We are being brainwashed into accepting something which is beyond anythng a normal person would do.

I want to sit in, start and drive the damn thing, then when I arive I want to switch it off at my pleasure, in my own time and on my own fu*cken terms!
I dont have a time and should not have to wait for this frikin car to finish whatever it needs finishing .... after payng 50k for the efing thing!

What happened with start, drive, switch off concept?

Farr out ...

I take it up a stretch of highway that takes 40 minutes to get back from and its usually still going so I have to do it again.

Honestly im considering selling the damn thing and cutting my loses, such a stupid mechanic, if you're going to put emissions shit in a car than atleast make sure it works, Id rather have adblue even if i have to pay more for it

Agreed, the thing that annoys me the most is that toyota are just sliding the issue under the rug like its not there, and these stupid software patch updates. Like how the f*ck is a software update gonna fix a mechanical design flaw its just beyond stupid

Agreed with all before me....
Personally I just drive it like a normal vehicle, get in drive and switch off when I’m done. Half way through a burn? Who cares, it will finish off upon next startup regardless.
Every service get Toyota to do the latest DPF update, aswell as clean 5th injector/housing and flush DPF and away you go, good as new and no need to worry about anything.
Then when out of warranty, just clean it yourself as per the awesome writeup on this forum.
I drive 100kms a day, 35km freeway 65km stop/start, and like most others will generally burn off when not on freeway.... 21,000kms on ODO now and good as gold so far. Does a burn every 300-350kms consistently since new, and averages 8.1-8.5/100 sitting @2.55tonne daily.

Don't know how to describe the sound it makes when doing a burn but it sounds like a low frequency rumble on and off every 30 seconds, i assume its the 5th injector firing diesel into DPF :?

If stopped, revs higher than usual. If on the move, easily noticed by increased fuel consumption soon as it starts and until it ends. Approx 3-4L/100 more than usual for the same given section of road.
Lastly, if you have a snorkel, it’s very noticeable through induction noise and turbo spooling vigorously.

Mine's an April '18 build, does a burn around 320 k's, I can only tell by the gauge on my phone. Revs only rise by 50 rpm, fuel consumption doesn't change exhaust temps around 600c°.

70% urban 30% hwy, with 2500 k's on it. Sometimes I stop it mid way through, be buggered if I'm letting a car rule my life. Has always just picked up where it left off after 10 minutes of driving, if I see it start a burn and I am driving through it's all done inside 15 minutes.

Mines a 2016 SR, done 38,000km in just under 2 years, I live in surburbia but get out in the bush fairly regularly. Does a burn every 300 - 330km, and you can tell (as others have said) by the different engine noise - hard to explain. If you stop and turn it off during the burn, then it just continues the burn again on the next drive after the engine has warmed up. I've had absolutely no problems with mine and have absolutely no concerns with switching off during a burn, and have never felt the need to keep driving to let it complete a burn.

Mines every 300klm approx. 2016 model 33k And no dpf issues.

I know as I have a scanguage 2 that shows dpf temps and accumulation %.

I can also tell it to do a manual burn buy entering a code on the scanguage.

I suggest you guys buy one. Then you'll know and can do a manual burn when it suits.

As some others have said before me you can tell mainly by the snorkel if you have one as you can hear it whistle more and smell it of you open your window sometimes. Also the increased full economy and revs

Thanks for all the replies. Atleast now I know my hilux isnt performing irregularly. Lets just all hope that toyota adds a manual burn option somewhere down the track to make life easier

I’ve got a 2016 SR5. 100% hwy and dirt/station road driving. Seems to burn off every 300km or so. A fair bit of this driving at northern territory speeds (130km). What annoys me, I pull over to get fuel, let it finish the burn off at idle (anywhere from 7-12mins) then move the car 15m to the bower and the burn starts again. Toyota can’t tell me why. Once it did this 4 times (I let it finish each burn at idle) it has the latest update, and they did 5th injector clean and manual burn at last service (60k). I’m sure it’s pushing my fuel usage up, I can’t get below 11L/100km (although I acknowledge my right foot may account for a fair wedge of this). I’m also considering moving the car on before the warranty is up...
