How often does your hilux do a burn off?

Cant help you with that but I assume you have a huge bank balance to pay the fines if your caught.

I second this. Im either dpf deleting or selling after warranty, how are they actually gonna check if its taken out? If you hollow out the dpf and re program the computer or whatever you call it so it doesnt go into limp mode they won't check. Apart from emissions test.

And what about everyone who has done egr deletes on older diesals, that apparently has a massive fine yet everyone I know does it and doesn't get caught. The way I look at it its either dpf delete and risk getting caught or replacement dpf when it eventually fails out of warranty. I know what im going to pick when the time comes

I have a 2016 sr5 auto . mine has 64,000 k's on it mine did a burn at about 35'000k and that's the only one ive noticed it do ,I live in the NT so everything is just about h/way driving.
I asked Toyota about it last week while it was in for a service they told me that the dpf is at about 40% blocked (not sure how they tell this) and apparently that its normal.


when its out of warranty and I will be removing the dpf and getting a full exhaust and a tune

I trust that someone will get caught eventually, however it will be rare.
I was pulled up by police for a motorbike exhaust once on the M5 (Sydney) and he escorted me to a truck stop where the EPA were all set up testing. I got fined and had to do a re-test after repair (swap) but the police told me that they only do the test station once or twice a year so chances of getting caught were low... not a regular route for me.

Its apparently supposed to be upwards of 10k from what I've been told but I call bullsh*t, from what I've googled I haven't actually found anyone that's got caught. The biggest problem which im worried about is insurance if I ever crash, as they check the emissions and code in the car (anything to avoid giving you money). So pretty much dont crash and avoid inspections stations.

I reckon replacement DPF's will become almost as common as exhausts. Ryco already have a decent range in their current catalogue, not sure on prices though.

Yes this is my thought also, sounds like a consumable part and part price is currently exorbitant... it's just a car part not an engine.

Well do not know if it is just me or not may be some others may have noticed this too.
Have had latest DPF update as far as I know on my 2016 SR5 manual what seems to be different is when the DPF does the auto burn at about 280 to 320 km same as others have said all seems ok, never had any smoke & takes about 30 km if you keep driving, however if you stop driving get out let vehicle idle the burn NOW stops till you get back in & start driving again & the burn starts up again till it decides when it is finished.
Before it had the latest update it would still do the burn if you got out of vehicle so fast idle & smell as usual. Thought this was odd.
Just come back from 6 weeks in the NT flying up there from NSW then hired a rental up there it was an 2018 April build 2.8 SR auto dual cab only had 25km when I picked it up over 4000 when I took it back it did exactly the same thing as my vehicle at home did its burn & yes if you got out & let it idle in the middle of the burn it drops to normal idle & the burn stops till you get back in & drive again just wondering if anyone else has noticed this also.

Mine got the latest update 3 weeks ago and definately still continues it’s burn whilst stationary as per before, higher idle and turbo boosting through snorkel. The burns are Definately noticeably shorter in duration though, with no other change in driving route or conditions.

Never experienced a noticeable change equating to the DPF burn-off symptoms that everyone has described.
34,000 kms of mainly hwy driving with a 2016 SR5.

I’ve only noticed mine by the smell of a burn off and I also suspect the engine iding smoother from time to time when doing a burn maybe due to the increased revs.
The smell I’ve noticed about 5 times over 27,000km and the smoother iding only recently.
Never seen smoke. I do a mixture of highway and city. Most times I’ve smelt it is after switch off in the garage.

There are two types of DPF burns- passive and active. Let’s say the DPF is full and needs to burn off.....
If the exhaust is hot enough at that point, it will instigate a burn off using only the heat already generated from the vehicle being under load.
Active burn off is when not enough heat is built up and extra fuel being injected via 5th injector is what creates more heat to get to desired temp to be able to complete a burn off. Hence why owners who constantly drive on freeway and/or under decent load constantly may not have noticed many (if any) burns.
According to Toyota, they’re programmed to burn off @300kms or when full, whichever comes first, so rest assured burns are regular whether they’re noticed or not.

My 2017 burns at between 300k & 350k all the time. It is on the freeway at least 80% of the time.
It'll do this even when I'm on a long trip without stopping, every 300 - 350k.
I know it's doing a burn cause i can see the dpf temp climb to the high 600°s via my scanguage.

I do 400kms highway 50km urban each week so dont think its driving habit thats causing issues
