Which Hilux

Postby redstar on Tue, 07 Aug 2018 6:26 +0000

Hi there
Looking at updating my 2006 V6 Hilux SR5.
Not sure if I should buy 2015 2.8 or 2014 3.0L.
Just wondering peoples thoughts.

If you can't buy new 2.8l Hilux and plan to buy 2015 2.8l model, then I would suggest 2014 3.0l model.
First year of the new model always has some issues in all brands. It was reported number of times here in regards to DPF issues in particular with early models.

Does it have to be SR5?, I have new SR and saved heaps by buying it instead of SR5. The money I saved I used to enhance features and install all accessories I really need and will use (check my signature) instead of paying extra 10k or more for some bling which I will never use.
As you can see I have quite comprehensive list of accessories on this car and still ended up paying waaaay less then I would pay for stock standard SR5.

$42,500 for a car + $13,500 for accessories = still cheaper than stock standard SR5.

Just my two cents ... someone may respectfully disagree, but hey opinions are like butts - everybody has one :)

Cheers

I actually have more accessories but forum is not letting me update my signature as it is limited to 255 characters
I still have bashplates, UHF, extra power points in the car etc etc :D

255 characters is a bit of an overkill as there are members here with way more accessories than I have and they can't list them all in their signatures.

There is a 3rd option. Buy a good used V6 2015 or 2016-2017. Same engine as you have.

Hey Red,

I have the 2014 and wouldn't charge it for the world. My justifications is it is the last model before they went super modernised. Small things like actually having a volume knob and not touching a screen to adjust the volume, having a gear stick for 4WD. Where (if my memory serves me correctly) from 2015 on wards. everything is push button electrical. Some people like that, I don't and as grunf said. This is only my opinion.

Let us know what you end up with!

I agree with the above, if Ihad to replace my 2011 I’d buy a 2015 as it is the last of the old shape.

Hi guys
Thanks for the feedback
Only thing that concerns me is the DPF issue with the 2015. What kms does this normally start? Does the 2016 have the same issues.Love the new style and upgrades but there seems to be lots of different opinions. Would buy another V6 but too thirsty.

I have a 2017 and the DPF white smoke issue started around 60000km, I do around 180km highway a day so long runs for burns to complete and DFP cloging wasnt an issue, its was the 5th injector that got clogged. Had 70000km service a couple of weeks ago and they flashed the ECU with the new update, cleaned the 5th injector and put a can of DFP cleaner through it, so far so good. Other than that its been great.

Yes the V6's use more fuel but make sure you aren't thinking with blinkers on before you go backwards severely in reliability, cost and driveability. Assuming you are talking auto and normal everyday driving at say less than 15,000km per annum you may well find even if the V6 was $2500 cheaper you will take up to 5 years simply to save the cost difference in fuel. You may find you'll find a comparable V6 for $5-10k cheaper, but not as easily as it used to be as people have woken up to the big con. A V6 auto will happily stay under 14L/100 on E10, maybe 14.5L/100, diesel typically costs 10-15c/L more to buy. Plus you have the added ongoing expense of owning the diesel, they are simply not anywhere near as reliable as a Toyota petrol or the old Toyota diesels. Add to that the DPF problems and in my opinion it simply isn't worth it. If you start putting taller tyres on and adding weight you'll find the diesel suffers more in economy drop too than the V6 does. All I'm saying is do your sums. I have seen many diesel Hilux and Ranger with bigger tyres and winch/bar etc, owners change the exhaust and chip them to regain some decent performance lost with the bigger tyres and extra weight. Then they still have less power than a V6 and use more fuel, and get less reliable due to the increased power output. Happy hunting!

I usually change cars every 3-4 years.
I just bought this 2018 SR Hilux and in 3 or 4 years time I will most definitely not be buying a diesel again unless they come up with something new instead of adblue, egr or dpf. So far I have no issues with the car - but simply don't want to drive the bloody thing and worry constantly if and when dpf will decide to play up, or concentrate if it is doing the burns and how often etc.

Problem is, at the moment there is no 4x4 dual cab petrol utes (new ones). From top of my head I can not think of any major manufacturer making them (at least not the ones who are selling in Australia).

My current SR has 6k on the odo and with current accessories is using approx. 11.5-11.8 l per 100 km's and as already mentioned by other users, diesel is always more expensive than petrol anyway + all those issues with egr's and dpf etc, it is just not worth the headache anymore.
I wish some of those car manufacturers paid attention of driver's opinion and how fed up we are with all that bs.

Cheers

I will be buying a Ram1500 Express when my 2011 gets too old. They aren’t much dearer driveway than a Wildtrack or Hilux top spec and are a 300kW V8 Hemi engine. Knowing me I’ll probably supercharge it too!

Test drive both Redstar, its the only way to know the complete difference between the cars.
Personally I think the 2.8L engine is a good solid performer.
The DPF issues that some cars are experiencing doesn't effect the performance or longevity of the motor, its just a carbon storing / burning /dumping emissions issue.
Having said that, the fifth injector will probably need cleaning every now and then over the years but that's not a big spend during a service.
