Noise when going around roundabouts

Postby brickmark on Mon, 09 Jul 2018 10:57 +0000

Hi all,

It seems worst in the morning when cold but when I go around a roundabout a loud noise comes from under the car - a bang, bang , bang then when I turn the wheel the other way to exit the roundabout it goes bang, bang , bang again

Any ideas?

Loose plastic panels in the wheel arches ?

Can you feel it through the floor or steering wheel ?

Is it the ABS brakes being applied cause you are a hoon and losing traction with the VSC kicking in ?

Thanks Gipsy,

Is a CV joint a warranty issue for a 35,000klm ute?

If its within its warranty period and you present it for inspection with stock wheels/rims probably is!

As above, present to the dealer with stock wheels and tyres. Normally a cv joint makes a clicking sound which gets louder. Check the cv joint Boots for a tear... Water does lots of damage to cv.

This may be a bit left field, but do you have solid aftermarket bashplates? If so check tension of all fixing points. I had the same issue and this was the culprit.

No stock standard Hilux

It only makes the noise in the morning when cold (no noise on the way home last night)

Some mornings it seems noisy than others - made this video of this morning but the morning before was louder and more clunks

Checked CV boots - all look good. This is a stock standard Hilux - never been off road (no bloody time, have to work to pay it off :) )

Sounds like something getting thrown around in the tub but assume it's not that simple ...

Struggling to think of anything that would be temperature sensitive.

Other simple thoughts:

Loose wheel nuts
Loose shocks, leaf spring U bolt nuts etc
Loose battery

Aside from things like that I'd be looking at drivetrain play or suspension/steering play, although you'd expect to notice this in the normal driving experience.

No - Due for a service in next couple of weeks so the mechanic is going to keep it overnight and take for a drive in the morning.

It is getting worse and I can go around the same roundabout in the afternoon when it is warmer ... nothing. So it is something to do with the cold.
