2018 Hilux Horn Upgrade

Postby Diceman on Fri, 06 Jul 2018 11:25 +0000

I know there have been a few posts over the years re upgrading the girly standard hilux horn to something more ballsy, and I've done a fair bit of searching through them, but I can't seem to find any real stand out option guy's are going for.
Most of the posts are from years ago, with the latest I could find being about 15 months ago.
Has anyone got any up to date advice on a decent ballsy horn or horns I can fit to my hilux without having to spend a fortune or re wire stuff?

Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers

there are many modern cars around with really good horns , the best ive heard are fitted to modern Volvos. just get a pair from a wrecker as long as the mounts are similar it should be an easy job. To make them work the best its advisable to wire in a relay but thats an easy job for any auto sparkie

Thanks for the advice fellas.
It sounds like the Hella Sharptone or Supertone get the nod here.
I didn't have a clue which way to go about it.
Searching old posts, there were blokes fitting horns from Rodeo's, BMW's , Volvo's , Lexus's and even old Mercedes Benz's, so I didn't have a clue what to do.

I just checked out the video comparison of the twp on you tube, and the Sharptone has a lower note to it, maybe it might suit a Hilux better than the Supertone.
If you guy's have a preference between the two for a Hilux, it would be good to hear your thoughts before I buy one.

Cheers

Apparently the Supertones are slightly louder and the Sharptones slightly deeper.

....I went for loud :D

Sound comparison video. sharptone vs supertone. Supertone requires a fuse upgrade I believe.

I went for yellow, but the deeper sound also played a part in choosing the sharp tone. [emoji6]

My sharptone stopped working..got another,.unplugged it all and can’t remember how it went back.

Some one said the horn terminal is positive switched? I’m in a 2012..

With the sharp tones, did you just unplug original and plug that into a terminal on sharptone, then ground the other sharptone horn terminal?

Best Hella horn upgrade.

Postby Diceman on Mon, 19 Nov 2018 9:36 +0000

Hey guy's,

I know there have been a few posts on the topic of upgrading the poxy sounding
standard Hilux horn, and there have been all sorts of suggestions.
I've narrowed it down to 4 of the Hella horns, the Sharp Tone, Super tone, Twin Tone and
Strong Tone. but I'm just not sure which one to go for, and what's involved in fitting them.
If any of you guy's that are a bit tech savvy, and have fitted some of these could shed some light
on fitting them, and which ones sound the ballsiest, it would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Easy to swap over, you just need to make up a harness for the ground and bolt it to the chassis. There is an unused 6mm hole on the radiator support on the passenger side you can use. The oem horns use the bolt as ground, I bought the yellow Hellas sharp tone from memory. I like them, louder than stock.

To get access you just need to remove the plastic trim around the bonnet release, push the clips holding it right in until they pop then lift out.

Plenty of room in there for the horns and wiring. YouTube has videos of people testing them out.
