Auto headlights, driving me insane.

Hi All
I brought a brand new 2016 dual cab Hilux from the dealer and the headlights always come on with the key and won't switch off untill you turn the car off and then open the driver's door. It means at night you can't sit in the car with the engine running to stay warm with out the head lights on. It's driving me and my wife insane as we often have to pick up the kids late at night from sporting/social events and spend many hours over a month waiting in the car. Please help!!!!

Hi Stephen.Coff, I searched for over an hour. Read heaps of posts and at least fixed the seat belt alarm.... I couldn't find one post about completely disabling the headlights, only adjusting sensitivity. I need to be able to turn them off at night and keep the car running. Cheers

I think the best you can do is turn them to the parking light setting on the stalk. Lights are still on but parkers only.

If you really want to go insane, just wait till late afternoon and everytime you go around a building, or under trees, or hit a shadow and your lights go from daytime runners to headlight....every f$@#&% time.

Bloody annoying all of the time but imagine the scared cattle as you drive through the paddocks or trying to creep at night without lights (night shooting) or wandering around the desert where no other cars are about. It just rests control from the driver and wastes battery and globes. How do we turn the bloody things off?

is there a way to wire a separate switch on a dashboard when stalk is in "auto" position and tap on lights wires to switch the lights off manually by using this switch (basically to cut the power to the lights by this switch)?

If this could be done, then "auto" position will be lights off, parkers position will be just that - parkers, and lights on position would be lights on.

And we would have full control of the damn lights again.

I've only got an 2006 model, so apologies if this is silly, but why not just remove the fuse? I'm assuming that it's just a pair of Parker lights that come on? Not that big of a loss to lose their function...?

It's an absolute mystery why they would wire it up without an 'off' setting.
When you're 4x4ing and you winch in the shade of a tree you can't turn the bloody lights off which drains too much of your precious battery power. The dash goes nuts and the winch won't work, stupidest design ever!
I'm going to ask an auto electrician to cut the circuit of the 'parkers' position (middle setting) because who needs a parkers setting anyway, the car has permanent DRL's.
Hopefully the middle setting will become 'lights off' so I'll have:
(1) Lights on
(2) Lights off
(3) Auto
I'll let you all know how I go...

I bought a clear sensor lens cover from ebay here:
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/252610155297
I also adjusted the sensitivity as detailed in this forum by piratepete here:
viewtopic.php?t=26752

This fixed most of the problems and now the auto only comes on when under a bridge or such for a protracted period, like in a traffic jam.

Works for me but your situation may vary.
