Dual Battery Kit and Smart Alternator

Postby Bidgee8 on Wed, 23 May 2018 2:01 +0000

Purchased Baintech dual battery kit without DC-DC charger for 2018 Hilux. Anyway of turning off smart alternator or do I have to purchase and install a DC-DC charger to charge second battery satisfactorily. Prefer to keep system simple but......
If have to what best deal?

Just been informed that need DC-DC charger for Baintech kit purchased and unlikely can turn off smart alternator on Hilux. Can do on Ranger apparently. Have access to Piranah DBE 180S which should work without DC-DC charger I am told.
Cheers

as you found out the smart function cannot be turned off . a DCDC is a good choice anyway they offer a better charge profile for the second battery and you can have inbuilt solar inputs

Get yourself a Projecta dc to dc charger they do not require an ignition wire mounted under the bonnet for a over a year now has not missed a beat

I didn’t think they had a smart alternator. I have a scan gauge on mine and it only fluctuates between 13.4 to 13.8 volts. Never seen it lower in volts. I have a ctek dc dc charger one of the early ones and it works fine.

Yes it's temperature compensating only.
