Hey everyone,
I'm looking at getting a snorkel but not sure which one. I like Safari Vspec. Also looking at Airtec? Not sure on price differemce but does anyone know how they perform? Lots of noise while driving? Etc...

Cheers

I have the TJM Airtec, easy home install with good instructions and I like the look of it.
With any snorkel you will notice some noise, the airtec is very quiet in my opinion though.
Snorkels aren't a performance upgrade, they're just for engine protection so I wouldn't be concerned unless you're building a high performance truck. All the reputable brands certainly don't restrict performance.

I have the TJM Airtech.
Think it looks great, not a huge long box at the bottom like safari, and doesn't look like a slug crawling up the side either.
I chose not to get the wedge tail head , but the more generic type (Ram?)
I thought in driving rain the windscreen would funnel more water into it......probably wrong, but that was my thinking.

In any case, the heads can be changed at a later date

Ive got a safari on my 2016. Pretty happy with it, no real wind noise at highway speeds. Just don’t get the Toyota one- a mate has one and it whistles like anything, as there is a small drain hole on the back of the snorkel.

A lot of the noise will depend on your engine/trans combo as much as anything.
Boss has vspec safari with diesel/auto and I notice his intake noise more then my own diesel manual ARMAX snorkel.
Both are easy as to install with very clear instructions too

One thing you might also want to consider
The Safari Snorkle head can be turned around to face backwards. Cant do this with the TJM

Unichip say you lose 10% of power with a snorkel (proven by dyno), they say the arb snorkel has the least restriction/loss

i think you'll find that ARB use Safari.

Wish i could remember the brand that looked like a slug

Any reason why you want to turn the head backwards???
Safari head is designed to ram air down and any rain is forced out the back of the head. This is how they help remove the restriction.

Some suggest its not a bad idea if traveling in convoy through dusty conditions.
Overgrown tracks that branches can snag on or get caught on, as it acts as a hook
Country roads where the crickets and grasshoppers are thick

Alternative is just drop back a little further in the convoy, be little more aware of your surrounds, or put a sock over the head etc.
i guess its just an added feature of safari.

For the most part, there's not that much different between them all apart from maybe looks and construction. They all seem to be designed to "ram " air down. With the exception being the stainless steel type that tend to face backwards.
Maybe Safari have worked out a little extra "magic" in their design by having a large rectangular box which stores more air for the engine to suck. This would probably only be of benefit when in traffic and not moving at speed.

Cheers for the info guys. I might go with Safari Vspec. I've seen the Safari Armax on a 100 series Cruiser and it just looks too bulky.

I went through the same question as you. Got the airtec (tjm). No regrets. Safari you can but on eBay if you want to install it yourself. Otherwise tjm is cheaper. It's just a plastic air intake. Don't over think it. But don't get the Toyota genuine as it is 2 piece and not watertight according to what I read.

TJM safari both good brands.
Toyota genuine doesn’t follow any lines.

Chiptorque told me the same thing, they dynoed a V6 Hilux standard and then with a snorkel. It lost significant kW and torque (at the rear wheels of course). It was around 7kW from memory, which would be 10kW at the engine. I guess it makes total sense - try breathing through a straw! Might have less effect on a blown engine than a NA too. Not sure what use a snorkel is on a petrol engine either.

Do you actually get any significant Ram effect in front of such a small intake as a snorkel? I thought apart from the negative of the engine bay heat the area under the bonnet would be at similar air pressure? The best place that I am aware of to get col air Ram effect is in front of the windscreen, this is why LX A9X had a rear facing scoop and cars like VL GroupA SS sucked air from the cowl area where the wipers sit.

Dyno run is done with the vehicle stationary so the air will need to be drawn through quite a long winding path, real world on road at 100kmh with the snorkel facing forward that would help push the air through with a little bit of force i would think

I still reckon any ram effect you'd get in such a small opening will be much less than the restriction created by the size of the tube. And in the end where you want increased power and torque is in lower gears at low speeds, where any Ram air would be negligible. At cruising speeds at Aussie road speed limits you tend to be at low throttle.

When you say small tube.
From what I have seen of safari across all makes and models they design their snorkels to be bigger then any part of the factory air inlet.
Most air boxes are heavily restricted. The Water trap is a huge restriction in air flow on the diesel lux air intake both 5-15 and 15+
That’s why on the ARMAX model they actually cut it out completely. You have a unrestricted 4” air intake from the ram head right through to the genuine intake on the air box.
You gotta remember to get the full potential of your system you have to change air intake engine chip/ecu and remove the exhaust restrictions. Then the engine breaths easily.
This is common sense basically if you are close to your GVM towing etc. you want clean unrestricted air flow throughout the entire system to improve fuel economy and let the system work easier.

I have just started a trip from syd to darwin and back. My fuel economy unloaded is around 10k per L. Now I’m loaded it’s 8. So anything I can do to improve engine performance is the difference between making it to the next Servo and stealing a jerry can.

Nothing wrong with that logic, except a short 4" intake would have to be less restrictive than a far longer one surely, especially one with a few bends in it? Basically compare the same setup from intake to airbox with and without a snorkel - it would be interesting to see the dyno comparisons. My guess is you are still losing power. At full throttle if you can feel suction at the tip of the snorkel it has to be restricting airflow, even if it is only slightly.

Agreed but I’d like to see real road tests. Dynos are a great starting point. But it’s like any muscle Car, dyno results never replicate to real world results.
I installed my ARMAX yes there are bends but they do everything possible to streamline the air path. Where some have multiple almost 90 degree bends. Safari thought about it and made it as close a possible to straight.
Couple pics below of my ARMAX going on last year.
