Hi guys, this post was written by Andrew Hallet-Patterson on a video done by John Cadogan regarding this issue. I'll leave the link to the video if anyone is interested in watching it at the bottom of this post.
"...Currently employed as a Mechanical Engineer with a mining contractor with a fleet of over 200 current model mining spec Toyota Hiluxs in various body configurations depending on the individual mines policy. After ongoing issues with the DPF, which resulted in multiple vehicles being banned from site due to excessive exhaust fuming, I was requested to investigate this ongiong occurrence. After 4 months of inhouse investigations the conclusion was reached unanimously that the position and angle of the 5th injector, along with highly turbulence and unregulated gas flow, was the issue. Simply, impurities were severely restricting or blocking the injector and/ or injector port, or worse case scenario, simply jamming the injector open, and the ECU failing to recognize the subsequent issue just defaulted into limphome. Our final report was supplied to Toyota but no further action has been taken. But, we did receive an interesting gift in the post from Toyota....A defeat box that plugs into the DPF loom and instructions on how to remove the DPF from the vehicle !!!!. The Electrical Engineers have now replicated the circuitry, understand how it defeats the system and applied to all the Toyota Hiluxs on the site I work on. The circuitry is also flexable enough to defeat other brands of vehicles that employ similar systems. Understandably not ideal under any circumstances but the DPF issue has been overcome somewhat"...

Guys.
An article from news.com.au
https://www.news.com.au/technology/inno ... 4b3b51e234

I'm on my third DPF and apparently the most current fix resolves the issue.
I have lost count the amount of times I've had to revisit the dealer for a forced regeneration.

Alas....

Three days after posting on here that i'd had 51000k's of trouble free motoring i noticed the white cloud of death following my Hilux. Back at the dealer now & they are telling me it's a simple ECU upgrade to fix the issue?
l'll post more at the end of the day when they are finished with it....

Just got back from the Dealer, no more white cloud of death following me, for now i guess.

Here's what they did:

"In accordance with technical newsflash TNF 2018 reflashed and force burn DPF.
Using GTS reflashed ECU file to updated version.
Removed fifth injector & cleaned - refitted
Inserted cleaner spray into sensor one hole after removing sensor - refitted
Using GTS did two burns in accordance with the technical newsflash instructions.
After completing two burns reviewed statistics and found the DPF to be ok"

From what they said, it's a software issue & it's been resolved with the latest update. Time will tell i guess......

Just saw this on youtube ... goes against what I was recently told by the dealer that no newer models were being effected. This happened to the rugged X ... not a good look.

Not a good look at all . Modern diesels are slowing dying

Far to much drama and emission crap for me .

Just wanted to know of any more news or issues with the dreaded DPF. My 2017 Hilux 4wd dual cab auto has just had 3 smoking events within the last 1500K's starting at about 37000K's with none previous to that. It only lasts for a minute before it clears out but very embarrassing. Up until the 37000K mark I was doing a lot of highway driving but since then lots of short trips around town although i have been deliberately taking it out on to 80-100K roads to try and get the burn going. I drive in eco mode most of the time and don't carry much weight and get 8.6L/100k which is accurate. I did notice on the last smoking event a different noise coming from the engine bay and the fuel consumption read out shot up. I assume it was the regeneration thing happening but are the clouds of smoke normal or acceptable? Will be having it's 40000K service soon and will be letting them know that i am well aware of the DPF issues with these engines. Will post back the results then.

Big announcement today to be with a manual DPF switch to be released:

Hopefully this will be retro fitted into existing Generation 8 vehicles...

Somehow I can't see Toyota retro fitting a switch into a quarter of a million Hiluxs, Prados and Fortuners in Oz.... think we'll be on our own sprouting useless lines from the Australian Consumer Law website... until we drive off in clouds of white smoke...

Happy to be proven wrong.

Presumably any such switch would need to be allied to some form of indication of the state of the DPF on the dashboard (as per the LC70) - in which case it's hard to see how it could be a retro-fit.

HI Guys,
I took my 16 Sr5 in on Monday to Cornes Toyota after getting cautioned by the police over the smoke that was blowing out the back the other day.
They did 2 regens, and have placed a new dpf system on order for the lux. They mentioned as noted above that new models will have a manual regen switch on them.

.... my big worry is will the clogging effect the life of the engine?

I have a switch in mine from Toyota and it shows on the screen between the speedo when it is doing an auto burn along with when a manual burn is available to do. You then have to be stationary, press the button and let it sit until it completes the burn.

No indicator for how full the dpf is though.

How did you get the switch installed? Was this retro fitted to an existing Hilux? Are you in Australia?

My Hilux is now almost out of warranty. I bought the vehicle for farm use not realizing the implications of the DFF burn that it does every second day. With the bushfire season now fast approaching I am extremely concerned that it may start a fire anytime without notice. I am asking a hypothetical question, If I was to remove the internal filter from the DPF (I know that it could be only used off road then) would it stop trying to do burns. Would it not think that the filter was clean as there would be no pressure difference on either side of the filter. So the ECU would not register a need to burn the particulate.

If you decide to go that way you'll need to purchase a DPF emulator to fool the ECU into thinking it's still there otherwise you'll be stuck in limp home mode. Here's a link to one .........

Had the 40000Km service today this is what was written on the service report. "Smokey Exhaust - Cleared by clearing calibration file - Reflash and forced DPF burn". They said that this new flash is 3 weeks old. Fingers crossed.
