Well looks like Toyo is now using a form of drano to flush out the DPF & put it back into the atmosphere where it should have gone in the first place. Good one Toyo.

In europe we have 2,4 and no dpf problems, I think it's because we also have adblue system.

im Looking at upgrading my hilux but after reading all these issues on pradopoint, fortuner forums and here,
I’m thinking twice. I’d get another hilux due to quality and reliability , but seems reliability is questionable?
Should I stick to my current 4.0 v6 hilux ??

You need to consider the sample size represented by the forum I suppose. Toyota sold 37,000+ HiLuxes in Australia in 2017 alone so over the life of the Gen8 variant they would probably have sold in excess of 100,000 of them. Add to that all the other vehicles using the same engine and you have a lot of them out there.

Then consider the number that have problems with DPFs and put it in perspective. This is not to deny that there may be a problem with the DPF but it doesn't appear to be an epidemic.

No vehicle is going to be perfect, witness Ford's problem with Ranger gearboxes, Amarok with the serpentine belt issue in the previous model, but Toyota do pretty well in my humble opinion. Soon after I got my Gen8 I had the "hard shifting" problem where it wouldn't come out of 5th or 6th easily but that was fixed quickly. Apart from that it's been good (touch wood).

As for changing from the V6 to the diesel, well I had the Gen7 V6 and it was a great vehicle with a pearler of an engine but the difference between the Gen7 & Gen8 platforms in terms of ride (I have the manual cab chassis), features and driveability is night & day. There is no way I would go back to the old vehicle.

Just going off the subject of DPFs here, you mentioned the hard shifting of the trans?
Firmware update fixed it I guess as mine does the same thing as it holding into those gears under light trottle causing labouring?

On the DPF subject, I spoke to my mechanic today and he mentioned in conversation that the DPF is really a issue with the Hilux as he has a customer with 4 gen 8’s doing around 50k per year and all of them are giving that customer grief.
I mentioned the delete option and he says a few are also going down that road once warranty has finished on them.

Doing a delete is certainly easier than buying a new ute and if that is all that is wrong with the Hilux after a few years then I think we got off lightly compared to other brands.

No, this is on the 6 speed manual. After a period of running in 5th or 6th it was extremely hard to shift back to neutral to drop a gear. The fix is to replace a part in the gearshift mechanism. It's not a common fault (mine was the 1st reported locally) but there is a service bulletin related to it.

Just got mine back after the DPF clean and ECU update. They cleaned the 5th injector as well, good to see but no manual DPF switch available apparently.

It sounds like they're working on a proper fix and in the meantime it's not much of a concern. Life, goes on. Contrary to what the youtube shills would have you believe.

Hi all
I’m new to this DPF and electronics always been old school.

I have a 2016 SR5 auto it has 57,000 k’s on it and I have only once noticed a burn happening.
If I wipe my fingers in the tail pipe they are black to me it’s saying it’s not burning off ( not working)
Is this correct ?
If it has tits or wheels ....it'll cost ya money

Pretty silly question but what happens when the warranty runs out and you can remove the Dpf altogether no more smoke and no more burn offs the whole system is a load of crap anyway?

$10k fine if caught and potentially no insurance if you have an accident as the vehicle can be deemed to be unroadworthy.

Year: Dec 2015
Kms: 50000km
Auto/Manual: Manual
Serviced at Toyota/other: Toyota dealer I bought it from
Oil used (if known): uknown - Toyota servicing
DPF issues Y/N: Y
Km DPF issues occurred: 50000km

I had never experienced any problems until 'after' the 50000km service. I'm not sure if they did anything but that's when my daughter noticed big woffs of blue/white smoke on take off (when a burn was in progress - higher revs). Also, previous to this, a burn would occur like clockwork -every 350 - 400kms and usually last for a bout 30-40km of driving. When the smoke started, the first burn lasted about 70km of driving. The 2nd time I had a dpf burn, it lasted for 110km of driving! That's when i knew something was up - took it in.

Dealer tried multiple manual regenerations. In the end they have said that my ute will be off the road anywhere from 1wk to a month as they need to order parts from Japan. They are keeping the ute there, as presumably it's not fit to drive. I asked what exactly was wrong and was told its the dpf - needs to be replaced. As I was walking through the workshop it was pointed out to me that there were another 2 hiluxes already in the workshop for the same issue.

I was also told that no 'new' hiluxes were experiencing the issue which is strange i thought - have they fixed it in later models? Anywho - will see how we go with replacement, when it comes.

I'm keen to find out what fuel brand people with & without issues have been using to be able to eliminate that as a potential cause. Personally I only buy BP. Recently started only buying the 'Ultimate' variety and I don't have a pre-filter (yet) but I do have a catch can (since 19,000Km)

26,000 Km
Toyota Service
Manual
Oil is allegedly Valvoline SynPower ENV C2 Motor Oil SAE 0W-30
2017 build and no issues as yet.
Manual 2017 SR5 | MT ATZ P3 R17/265/70 | King OEM Shocks | Rhino Evo Front Bar & winch

Ive only used BP......Not for any reason otherthan, its handy and the velocity points.
I do have a catch can and prefilter.
36000kms no issues to date

But I would be interested to know if there are failures on DPF's running a catch can

Anyone heard of a "spec change and this car will get a manual DPF switch (all TD Hilux’s)" - was quoted this while looking at a new work fleet vehicle.

Year: 2015
Kms at the mo: 33k
Serviced at Toyota
Oil supplied by Toyota
DPF issues = "yes"

Happened at about 26K, big plumes of white smoke.
They replaced the DPF, and was told last week that they have a software upgrade to do.
Other than that, i'm pleased as punch...what an incredible vehicle

I'm on 23k (Early 17 build) and still haven't seen any smoke out the back. I keep looking in the mirror when I give it a bit lugging 500kg up steep hills... nothing yet, waiting.

No issues as yet after eighteen months of ownership.

I do, however, remove the 5th injector & housing religiously every 10,000k's myself & give it a good clean. Twice now it's been almost completely blocked with soot at the base of the injector port. I do it myself so i know it gets done & it's an easy 20 minute job.
